Ayy yo,

I just read in the paper today where "DNA clears man of rape and murder after 21 years behind bars..."  Wonderful!  However, the man in question still spent 21 years of his life behind bars for a crime that he didn't commit.  WTF!!!  The penial institutions in America are some of the most dehumanizing, inhumane, and downright stressful systems (and they should be) that citizens, who are unfortunate enough to have to be subjected to them, have to deal with.  If you're found guilty of a crime and are sentenced to prison, it takes away your rights, your privileges, your ability to ever truly relax again (not even in a church on Easter sunday), and of course in most cases your manhood.  (Danger Will Robinson: Booty-hole alert!  Rump Rangers are on the prowl!!) If you are truly guilty - go do your time and don't whine.  Period.   But to have to deal with all that, day after day without reprieve, only to be proven innocent 21 years later of a crime that you DIDN'T commit could make you want to hurt somebody for real... or worse.

This man's only option at this point is to sue the system.  But, wait a second, due to the high number of conviction turnovers over the past few years, a lot of states have started to pass laws that would limit or cap the amount of money that one could possibly sue for if wrongly imprisoned.  And peep this - you still have to go court and prove your case of innocence if THEY fugged up in the first place!

Double WTF!!!

I'm curious.  Where do you stand on this one, BAF?  Holla atcha boy.

I'm totally with you on our so call Justice System it sucks big time. So in the meantime we have someone who is innocent and has served 21 years behind bars for a crime that he didn't commit. While the ******* that did commit the crime is running free. WTF!!! Then to find out that 21 years of your life is gone forever and you can't sue the judicial system is a bunch of crap. Not only that where are you going to find a job, you can't vote, and everyone will still look down on you eventhough you are innocent.

What's up with that?

We have the worst criminal justice system ever. Evidence and things like that have nothing to do with whether or not your go to jail and when you get there and it is proven they made a mistake its like OOOP'S.
You are right at this point there is nothing they can do to rectify this injustice. You just got to love America!!!

Who woulda thunk it, but I totally agree with you on this one.  And people question why I don't support capital punishment.  There are too many innocents locked away for crimes they didn't commit for me to be comfortable with ever putting someone to death for a crime.

I never had much faith in the system.  Then I learned of The Innocense Project and other law school based projects.  Using limited resources and funds, they have resolved crimes years and even decades after the fact.  What little faith I did have in the system died.

Students doing, often long distance, what trained professionals refused to do at the time of the crime.  In NY I've seen what bad cops and poor police work can do.  Remember the cental park jogger case?

Worse yet, once convicted, proof of your innocence does not win you automatic release.  In some cases, wronged defendants are forced to sign waivers of the right to sue in order to be released.  Having convictions fully expunged from your records is just about impossible.

There's not enough money to pay for 21 years lost. Don't get me started on the penial system it's not fair so called white collar crimes do more harm and get better treatment.
