Scary stuff.

The program Mystery Diagnisis on Discovery Health channel profiled a man who was believed to have a worsening heart ailment over several years.  It was all caused by sleep apnea in the end.  The heart was really fine, but until the sleep apnea was treated he had what appeared to be repeated small heart attacks.

That's a real serious medical condition that so few people know about. I think more awareness about this should be on tv. I was tested for this when I had my surgery that was one of the requirement that my doctor wanted on all of his patients. Mine came back mild to moderate of course I was 244. That was enough for my insurance company to approve my surgery.

I am glad to read this and I agree that there needs to be more awareness on sleep apnea. I see so many patients that is unaware how many things are affected by lack of quality sleep. The treatment is fairly easy too. I love the results in the morning after waking a patient from wearing the CPAP the 1st night and they tell me how rested and alert they are. That's best part of the job!
Highest weight- 262lbs
Lap band- Aug 2006 - 254lbs.
Lowest w/band 214lbs. .
Gained up to 271 due to the band
Got DS revision April 2010!! Current 145lbs
At 5'8 my goal was 160lbs but I surpassed that with the DS!!!!!!

Thankd for the posting. I suffer from sleep apnea and its roough. I know it is underdiagnosed in this country. Its good to increase awareness because many time docs dont even recommend a sleep test to patients who suffer symptom of Sleep Apnea. Its best to go to a pulmonolgist to have them refer you for a test. Many primary care docs dont have the level of training needed to understand exactly what sleep apnea is. They just have general knowledge and often overloook it. It is a very serious affliction that can lead to serious illness and even death if left untreated

Thanks for your responses.

I suffered from it for years as I started putting the weight on prior to WLS.  Getting help can be really beneficial to your health and peace of mind.

Thank you so much for this article because I just started using a cpap machine. When I was 355 lbs my sleep apnea didn't require a cpap. My last sleep study showed that I sleep 65% of the time and stop breathing every other minute. I don't snore or sleep on my back or stomach. This is very serious and could possibly be related to my seizures and my stroke symptoms last month.

This article might finally get my hubby to the dr. because I know he needs a sleep study.
