Hello,
1. It was my choice just to outright tell them and I did. I could have just said I was having surgery without stating what kind.
2. It was covered under FMLA. However, I only took 3 day off for the Lap-Band. So I used 3 sick days to cover the time off.
3. Five days including the weekend and again it was the Lap-band surgery I had.
In this recession, it does make you think twice doesn't it? Good luck to you.
People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. ~Author Unknown
1. I did not go in to detail of what find of surgery I was having simply because I didn't feel that it was any of there business. Also because I didn't want to be topic of conversation while I was out.
2. Yes I did take FMLA, but only for a week after that it went into short term disability
3. I took the full 6 weeks that I was allowed out. I could have gone back in about 3 or 4 weeks if we are just looking at the pain factor. The additional time I took to get my mind right and try and get into a routine of what I would be eating.
Now in your case, If your company is already going through layoffs, I would be hesitate to go into detail about the type of surgery you are having because a large amount of people still do see the gastric bypass as a necessary surgery but more so an elected surgery. So you may run into some opposition. Now that is just my opinion on it.

I think by law your job can give u up to 3mths on FMLA without getting th pink
I'am hoping to have it soon. I'am just going to tell them I need off because of Dr. orders I think i'am going for the long wait just to make sure everthing is heal so about 6 or 7 weeks

1. How did you tell your job? I told my manager & told her not to tell a soul, as she was a mandatory need to know. Then I told a few people AFTER work on my last day, then told them not to say anything, but someone did, but for some reason, thought i told her knee surgery. So, I was asked several times how my knee surgery went. However, when I got back, I told those who asked & corrected those who were under the impression that I'd had knee surgery.
2.Did you take FMLA or FMLA/short term? FMLA
3. How many weeks did you take off VS. how many did you really need off? I took off 4 weeks, really needed six, but surgeon wouldn't budge. Go back when you're ready.
My job has had a huge number of layoffs so I would like some advice on the best route to take! That's the beauty of fmla, your job is protected, regardless of what's going on, matter of fact, if you're on fmla, you are more protected than someone that is actively at work!

I havent' had surgery yet..but if I take my own personal vacation time..why should I have to tell anyone.
also I'm haveing lap band..so I was thinking I wouldn't need a lot of time off. I was gonna take a week of vacation time plus the weekend
I took FMLA when I had my baby a two yrs ago..
but much like some of y'all I'm just not with everyone beig all in my business and me being the topic of conversation why I'm gone
and we just found out today I will ahve a new manager on Monday..and not sure how she will feel about it..so I'm just gong to take the time that is mine..and let them know when I think they need to know. ..

why waste good vacation days on surgery when that's what flma is for? I would still sign up for fmla, as you will be protected if you have any issues or need more time out. All you have to tell your superiors is that you will be on medical leave, if they ask anything more, they are violating fmla. Only ones that NEED to know the exact procedure are you and your flma coordinator.
flma was created for a reason, to protect workers for medical reasons. They can't do a dang thing to you if you have your procedure covered by flma. for example, I had a stricture right off the bat, so my return to work was delayed & I've missed work like every other week due to additional surgeon appts & outpatient procedures. I'd been in a world of trouble if I wouldn't had this covered under flma.
