COFFEE ??
I haven't heard that about the coffee. I have found that doctors follow different programs and have different rules so it very well may be true for the program you are following.
If it is, I think you will need to slowly ween yourself away because I would imagine that being pretty hard to do cold turkey.
My best to you on the start of your WL journey!

Hello,
I had the lap band I see you are interested in the sleeve they are kinda similar in being restrictive procedures, I am 4 years post op, I had GERD really bad before I got my band and I can still drink coffee but I find that if I drink it everyday it will irritate me and give me heartburn, but I do drink it sometimes, so I agree with Kim B, you may want to check with your surgeons office and nutritionist, but I would think it may be OK after 6 month to a year to drink coffee, but I would not do it right after surgery since you will be healing.
Good luck
Best wishes,
Rhonda
Good Morning to you and my birthplace, Bronx, New York!
I have a "no coffee" surgeon.
Reasons:
It is a natural diuretic and can contribute to dehydration especially in newbies who may not even know they are dehydrated.
It is also an irritant to the lining of the stomach/ pouch and can contribute to ulcers and inflamation.
His protocol is no regular coffee for a month (I think?) pre op. Decaf only limited to one or two cups a day.
No coffee whatsoever for a month post op.
Beginning in the second month post op, decaf only limited to one or two cups a day.
I can't remember when regular coffee is ok but I can eventually have it again.
I can't speak about Red Bulls and such but ,I think you would want to avoid high caffine beverages altogether. Post op you will need 64-100 oz of non cafinated liquids daily depending on your surgeon's protocol. Every 1 oz of cafine has to be replaced by 1-2 oz of water. None of it counts towards you daily liquids. Drinking that minimum 64 oz will be a challenge in the begining.
Start weening yourself now. Stew Leonards in Yonkers has the best half caffine/ half regular coffee I know of. I was a pot a day girl myself ,but I switched to Stews half caf, then to Stews decaf. I don't miss the cafine anymore and I only drink decaf now.

V'N MY RNY. WORKING FOR ME BECAUSE I WORK FOR IT.
thanks ladies for all the responses. I will see exactly what my surgeon says once I meet directly with her on the 18th. I already know that at some point after surgery that I will need some caffiene at certian times. I guess it will be a case of moderation along with trying to off set the dehydration affect with more water. I was just curious to see how the post op folks such as yourselves dealt with the coffee issue post op. Thanks again :)
