Hello Ladies and Gents. I introduced myself a little while back. I am a newbie ( 6 months pre op with my first actual doc visit on Aug 18th)  and I wanted to once again thank everyone for the warm welcome I recieved on this board. I have a basic question. I recently went to the seminar here in the Bronx and  recieved a lot of information. It seems that I had heard them say that I had to begin weaning off of coffee. This past week I also read something along those lines too in the brochures that I was sent home with. What was unclear to me was whether or not that is one of the things that one is expected to give up for good......or did I read more into it that what it said.  Have  you all been asked to give up coffee as well for good???   I know it sounds funny but I am one of those people that cant see functioning without caffeine. Do any of you take in caffiene at all (include drinks like red bull) ?  If so what is it like after sugery. Thanks....I just had to ask....have a great  day

Good Morning Good,

I haven't heard that about the coffee.  I have found that doctors follow different programs and have different rules so it very well may be true for the program you are following.
If it is, I think you will need to slowly ween yourself away because I would imagine that being pretty hard to do cold turkey.

My best to you on the start of your WL journey!

Hello,

I had the lap band I see you are interested in the sleeve they are kinda similar in being restrictive procedures, I am 4 years post op, I had GERD really bad before I got my band and I can still drink coffee but I find that if I drink it everyday it will irritate me and give me heartburn, but I do drink it sometimes, so I agree with Kim B, you may want to check with your surgeons office and nutritionist, but I would think it may be OK after 6 month to a year to drink coffee, but I would not do it right after surgery since you will be healing.

Good luck

I  am like you with the caffiene.  This is my understanding - but listen to your nutritionistfirst of course.  Caffiene dehydrates and it ,it makes some people hungry.  Some find the acid in it irritating.  if you drink it, you can't count it towards your liquid intake for the day.  My surgeon is of the mind that a morning cup of coffee is not a problem.  Other surgeons say no caffiene.  I'm almost 5 months out.  So far so good - I don't  like to give "bad" advice but the truth is I have coffee everyday and thus far it hasn't bothered me.

Best wishes,

Rhonda

Good Morning to you and my birthplace, Bronx, New York!

I have a "no coffee" surgeon.

Reasons:
It is a natural diuretic and can contribute to dehydration especially in newbies who may not even know they are dehydrated.
It is also an irritant to the lining of the stomach/ pouch and can contribute to ulcers and inflamation.

His protocol is no regular coffee for a month (I think?) pre op.  Decaf only limited to one or two cups a day.

No coffee whatsoever for a month post op.

Beginning in the second month post op, decaf only limited to one or two cups a day.

I can't remember when regular coffee is ok but I can eventually have it again.

I can't speak about Red Bulls and such but ,I think you would want to avoid high caffine beverages altogether.  Post op you will need 64-100 oz of non cafinated liquids daily depending on your surgeon's protocol.  Every 1 oz of cafine has to be replaced by 1-2 oz of water.  None of it counts towards you daily liquids.  Drinking that minimum 64 oz will be a challenge in the begining.

Start weening yourself now.  Stew Leonards in Yonkers has the best half caffine/ half regular coffee I know of.  I was a pot a day girl myself ,but I switched to Stews half caf, then to Stews decaf.  I don't miss the cafine anymore and I only drink decaf now.

My Dr. asked me to lay off  until my stomach healed. I have a lap band. He asked me to not do the ream because of the calories, but coffee is now fine.  Honestly, with all of the protein I eat, it is the only thing that keeps the pipes moving.

thanks ladies for all the responses. I will see exactly what my surgeon says once I meet directly with her on the 18th. I already know that at some point after surgery that I will need some caffiene at certian times. I guess it will be a case of moderation along with trying to off set the dehydration affect with more water. I was just curious to see how the post op folks such as yourselves dealt with the coffee issue post op. Thanks again :)

I have heard about lay off the caffiene (sp) I started buying my coffee from a company and it doesn't have all the chemicals in and you can buy in bean or grounded. I buy 6 lbs a month if you send me an email. All I drink is decaf and you order flavors too.

I didn't drink regular coffee until I over a year post op.

I drink it now without any problems.
