New Post-op Tip of The Week
Sorry newbies it's been awhile but frankly my brain is not working properly. I'm going to use myself as an example today.
On the 13th of Aug., I'll be 18 months out from RNY surgery and I've had some neurological symptoms going on. First of all, I had seizures before surgery but I haven't had 1 for 2 yrs before surgery but now they are fast and furious and I have a central nervous system disorder diagnosis.
This could be a side effect of not getting enough of the right vitamins and malnourishment. My labs have been consistently low in vitamin D. Sometimes it takes months to get a TRUE reading of your vitamin levels. It is imperative to take all of your vitamins daily for the rest of your life. Right now, I have post it notes all around me to remind me to do simple tasks that people take for granted everyday. I can't say for sure that it's due to a vitamin deficiency yet but I've had several tests run last week. I take my vitamins but maybe not the right dosage due to my malabsorption. Children's vitamins will not do it, you are an adult with adult needs, and if you're a woman you need extra calcium and iron. If you've had a hysterectomy or in menopause or in perimenopause you need extra calcium because you're at a greater risk of osteoporosis due to hormone and bone loss. Dr.s are only required to take 1 semester in nutrition so you must be your own advocate in your vitamin and nutritional health. Take care of yourself and follow up with your appts. whether you're a newbie or a vet.
