There are a million diets out there, but choose what is most healthy.  I say weigh****chers or a low carb diet program.  Talk to your Dr or surgeon's office.  Often they have a GREAT nutritionist available that will be able to help you in making the right choice.  Okay, with that said.  If you are going to have WLS (weight loss surgery) you need to start thinking right now like one of us.  Start with this:

1) The 30-20-30 rule. Stop drinking all fluids 30 min before your meal.  Make your meal last 20 minutes and wait another thirty before drinking again.

2) DO NOT DRINK AND EAT AT THE SAME TIME!!!

3) Give up drinking soda!  Start out by cutting down if you need to but with the intention of quiting it.

4) Eat off of a small plate (like the size of a desert plate) and use small utensils (like desert forks and spoons)

5) Chew each bit at least 20 times, putting your fork down in between bites.

6) Stop eating sugar.  Replace it with splenda or a sweetener if to begin with, but stop eating sugar and sugary things.

7) Cut out simple carbs (crackers, cookies, pastry, white flour, white potatoes, white bread) and replace it with complex carbs like brown rice, whole wheat pastas, breads and cereals.  Choose sweet potatoes instead of white.

8) 8 -10 glasses of water EVERY DAY, if not more.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL

9) EXERCISE.   Now, I don't care if you do five minutes, yep I said five minutes of exercise today as long as you do it again tomorrow and the day after that and then increase it.  Try walking around the coffee table or living room during comercial breaks.  You think I'm being silly, but I'm not.  It's not where you start sweetie, it's that  you started and where you finish that counts. You have to start thinking like a weight loss surgery patient RIGHT NOW.  Right mind, right heart, right results!!!!  Hope that helps.

Sending you prayers.  Keep us posted

Are you required to see a nutritionist before surgery?  I would wait and see him/her to get a diet.  I was required to meet with the nutrionist before being scheduled for surgery.  She gave me a 1200 calorie diet and instructions for the pre-op liquid diet based on a surgery date.  I'm considered a lightweight so I only had to do the pre-op liquid diet for 1 week to shrink my liver.

I had VSG and love it.

High protein .... low carb (Atkins) is always good for weight loss.

My cardiologist reccomends a cross between Atkins and South Beach diets.  Higher protein than South Beach, lower carbs than South Beach but not Atkins low, and lower fat than Atkins.  About 30, 40, 30, ratio of protein, carbs, fats.  Basically meat and veg with a little fruit and whole grain thown in plus good fats.  Leave the sugar alone.

A 1000 calorie diet would be
300 cal protein = 75g
400 cal carb= 100g
300 cal fat= 34g

Easy estimating tips:
protein and carbs = 4 calories per gram
fats = 9 calories per gram
1 ounce of dense protein foods = 7grams of protein

I use 1000 to make the numbers easy.  Check out caloriesperhour.com or livestrong.com/daily plate for tools to calculate your caloric needs to looe 2lbs per week.

Good luck.  Its smart to get prepared.
