Should he be fired for being racist or for being stupid?

A Boston cop referred to Professor Gates as a "jungle monkey" in a mass e-mail sent to some of his fellow National Guard members and to the Boston Globe.

thats a mess.  He should be fired for both.  First for being and idiot, why would you trust people enough to think you could voice how you feel, what makes you be so trusting to your friends...I hoped he learned ...everybody dont feel like you feel.  Secondly, you live in the 21st century there have been enough fools that have paid the price for using words like monkey and jungle in the same conversation with black folk.  Somebody had already showed you the price you pay for going down that road.  The more I think about it.   Stupidity should be on that pink slip.    I could understand it if he was a 60 year old fool.  but a 30something fool, c'mon.  I think about all the other idiots that will come behind him.  DUMMIES

I'm still trying to understand how he can say "I am not racist" after WRITING 'banana eating jungle bunny'...... LOL!!!

But wait..... I have said or thought 'dumb azz wetback' a couple, two, three times in my day - but I will roll with my Hispanic homie all day and night!  I grew up tight with my best friend who is Hispanic and I understand what the term means as an insult to them - kinda like 'field ninja' with US.......

He may very well regret what he said, but the statement "that's not who I am" is so not true.  That "banana eating/jungle monkey" comment came directly from who he is.  He's just in denial and trying to redeem himself to keep his job.

If indeed he sent that email from his place of employment, no doubt it's grounds for dismissal.

I don't think it matters from where he sent the e-mail.  He identified himself as a police officer and made his department look bad.  Where I work we have a corporate code of ethics that extends outside the workplace.  If my bosses were to see me on the news getting busted for drug dealing, believe me, the pink slip would be in the mail the same day.

In Barrett's e-mail, which was posted on a Boston television station's Web site, he declared that if he had "been the officer he verbally assaulted like a banana-eating jungle monkey, I would have sprayed him in the face with OC (oleoresin capsicum, or pepper spray) deserving of his belligerent non-compliance." Barrett used the "jungle monkey" phrase four times, three times referring to Gates and once referring to Abraham's writing as "jungle monkey gibberish."

"Officer Barrett did not call professor Gates a jungle monkey or malign him racially," Marano said. "He said his behavior was like that of one. It was a characterization of the actions of that man."

Racist Defined and I somewhat agree with this definition: : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.

For sure what he said was a racial slur against Blacks, now whether he would use race as  the determining factor to affirmatively discriminate against someone is another matter. Say, if he would harm or arrest a Black person for something that he would allow a white person a pass. The word racist and racism has an inborn INTENT factor; we can only garner Intent from someone's Actions. Historically, Blacks and other Minorities have NOT always been able to prove racism on the part of individuals/groups...but we do, through our personal experiences "Know It Whan We 'See' It!", even though we can not articulate it.

So, does using a racial slur means that someone is a racist...I don't think so (I remember the Jesse Jackson, J/Haime usage for Jews, and I don't for one moment think that he's a racist...though some Jews differ). Does using a racial slur in a public forum, and considering his position mean that this cop is STUPID for putting himself "on blast"...In My opinion, YES! Does a person in a position of public trust, with the capacity to do GREAT Bodily harm and/or great detriment to someone's reputation, who has prejudged an encounter and said that he would use unnecessary force to control the situation, deserve to be fired, suspended, taken from a position where he can cause great bodily harm... I believe YES.

This cop and Sargent Crowley are examples of the reasons Blacks teach our Males in particular to basically act the "boy" with cops. I am sooo glad we (Americans) are having this dialogue about race problems...It is SOOOO clear that we (Americans) DO NOT live in some "Post-Racial" era.
