If you are three to six months in this new lifestyle...how is it working for you?
What are your greatest moments and your biggest struggle since the wls?

Where to begin!

It is hard for me.  I'm atypical in that I struggle with weight gain so its always two steps forward, one step back.  I never expected that.  RNY or any wls cannot fix all metabolic issues.  Every pound lost is a struggle for me.

That being said, I have adjusted to my new lifestyle fairly well, but only after months of angst.  My exercise habits were always good so no change there.  Learning to plan my diet and finding out what works for me vs what the doctor and nutritionist prescribe is my biggest ongoing struggle.

I don't normally cook but I have to slap something together like it or not because quick prepared foods won't work anymore.  I am far more selective about where I eat outside my home.  I keep food and protein powder in my purse and car so I am never caught off guard and wind up eating foods I'd rather avoid.

My biggest moment was when I finally lost 50 lbs, 135 days post op.  It came after 58 days of loosing and regaining the same 14 lbs.  This despite being compliant, left me fearing I may end up a wls failure without hope.  With the first post op fifty gone and fifty gone over the previous five years I know I can loose the last fifty.

Thjs is a great post.... On a Sunday night, I'm not sure how many answers you'll get, but here is what I remember when I was 3-6 months out....

I remembered this being the time I was really trying to...

1. get in my protein
2. get in enough water
3. walk/exercise
4. learn what foods I could eat (that were healthy), and which ones I could not eat
5. dumping, dumping, and dumping... and most of all dumping...
6. enjoying the pounds melting away....

Tip: Please take advantage of this time as it is the time when you should really try and lose as much weight as possible. I didn't veer away from my doctor's orders during this time at all.... no alcohol, sugar, or sugary drinks... not even sugar free....

I wish you ALL the best on your weight loss journey.... 'tis quite a ride....

Great post!

I am almost 6 months out and this new lifestyle is working ok for me. I must admit.......I've tested the waters and that was a mistake. My biggest struggle is that I can basically eat whatever I want just in small portions. I'm not easily motivated when I'm stalling and I believe this is my third time so far. I have to force myself to get active again but the proof is in the pudding because I'll start back losing again once I do.

My greatest moment is when i hit the 50 lb weight loss and then the 75 pound weight loss. I felt like I'd accomplished something and 50 more pounds off seem obtainable. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
When nothing else could help................LOVE lifted me!!!!

Whoever said that this is the easy way out is insane.  I didn't know that I was going to have to work so hard for the weight to come off.  The first 4 mos. the weight just melted of but these past 2 mos. I've been working for it and the stalls really discourage me because I know that I'm doing what I should.  ~sigh~ But I can't complain because I am down 90lbs. in 6mos.  with another 60 to go.

Its has its unbalances however I am feeling fantabolous.  Sexy is growing on my like a slick leather glove.  My biggest moments a few, lack of medication, being called sexy, people doing double takes when they see me, and having a wonderful relationship with my shower to name a few.  Struggles, I am able to eat fried foods, chips, just about anything and not dump.  Have to remember I have lost weight before however its always been keeping it off.
I pray to always remember newbies

I love my new lifestyle.  Food doesn't rule my life anymore.  I'm more social now.  Before I use to hide from the world, friends, and family.  I would turn down invitations to events and gatherings to stay home and eat.  Sad........I know.  I feel healthier, and I'm proud of myself for making a decision to change my life.

My biggest struggle was working out.  Two weeks ago (4 months out), I made a major change here too.  I realized I need to take advantage of these first 6 months and got a workout partner.  Now, I'm lifting 3 days a week and doing cardio 5 days a week.  hopefully this will help, because the scale had sllllooooowwwed down.  I had to realize my VSG is a tool but I have to put in some effort too!

Hi,

The new lifestyle is a work in progress.  For the most part, it works for me.  My greatest moment with WLS has bto be hitting the 100 lbs lost and feeling like I look good in clothes again - an achievement  which has done wonders for my self-esteem.  My biggest struggle is finding a new stress reliever, boredom reducer, time filler , easy way to make me feel better that food/eating filled in my life. Also, exercising and drinking enough liquids will be continual challenges for me.

I haven't posted on the boards in some months but I had surgery on 3/09/09 sometimes I forget I had surgery. I now can say I'm enjoying life like i should be. since surgery I've lost 100 I never thought I would be able to say that to anyone. I luv that i can go in wear clothes that i grew out of years ago. Funny thing is I'm shrinking out of those clothes now. My struggle hum since the weight is melting off my body image is keeping me in the Gym to TONE TONE TONE as much as possible lol

Lets see.....at 3 months out, here are my oberservations:

Eating healthy is a breeze because I'm used to it now.  Plus since I don't eat much, even when I endulge I'm not doin much damage.  For example, I was at a barbeque the other day and I was faced with all the typical "good to you but bad for you" foods.  Instead of completely depriving myself, I had a bite of a rib, a forkful of macaroni & cheese, and a bite of some fried fish.  After those bites, I was good.  I satisfied my craving without doing much damage.  So when I'm presented with my favorite "bad for me" foods, I have a bite and keep it moving.

Exercise is helping me lose weight steadily cuz I do it daily.  I have a pedometer from www.gowearfit.com and it motivates me to get my walking in.  I average 10,000 steps a day which is 5 miles.

My greatest moment was teaching my daughter to ride a bike recently.  I was running along side the bike as she wobbled and swerved...after going down the entire street chasing her, I realized I just ran down the entire street.  I immediately thought about how much my knees and ankles would hurt in the morning.  Well, the next day I woke up feeling great so I did it again!!

My biggest struggle is with alcohol.  I have hada few drinks in the past few weeks and unfortunately, I had no obvious adverse effects.  I've still been losing an average of  4.5 lbs a week but I  KNOW i'd be losing more if I didn't drink.  Plus with the rapid weight loss, my liver is working hard enough without me adding Hennessy and Johnnie Walker Black in the mix.

But overall, I'm happy with my results.  I'm feeling great and looking better every day.
