SistahGirl,
I have read one of his books, "The Empire of Ocean Park", I do not remember it in great detail, because I read it many several years ago, but I do remember thoroughly enjoying the book. I can remember it having to do with some secret move called the elixer... anywho, he is a really good writer, and he seems to tie in socioeconomical issues within the black community.

The Emperor of Ocean Park  was his first work of fiction.  He had earlier non-fiction publications dealing with the "black elite."  Right now I'm reading his most recent novel which is much better than the first one.  I believe there is one in between that I haven't read.   He is just a tad bit long winded.

Hey MM:
I watched it and the Prelude...Both were really good. I thought it was much more structure than #1. I found it very, very interesting. And Yes, there are all types of things going on with Black people that does not include focusing on the "poor" all of the time. There is a lot of stuff that focuses on Blacks who have potential and drive, and want to move away from poverty...  I particularily enjoyed the segment with MLT. If "we" don't get Blacks with potential and mentor them to matriculate the coropoate system, we are failing our people. There are several groups that offer this type of mentoring.

I also enjoyed President Obama's news conference on the need for Comprehensive Health Care for Americans. I am also glad that we have a President with courage, he really laid out the situation with Skip Gates...calling what the poilce did STUPIDITY, further, that this is the type of thing/profiling that Blacks live with everyday. I am so proud that we have a President that won't run and hide on issues that plague America (USA). He used this as a teaching moment, a moment to open up dialogue between the Races. Everyone is talking about this now...if this can happen to Skip Gates at Harvard Square, it can happen to anyone...IT DOES happen all the time!

I agree - the MLT program opened by eyes to the fact that I have lost that component in my life right now - I am where I am today because of the network and mentoring I had from other Black women professionals at the places I worked.  But I am solo uno negro at the place I am now and there's nothing nearby for me to interact with other professional Black women.

I am going to put finding a group or social club for that on my 'to do' by the end of 2009 list for sure.

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

I thought this one was much better than part 1 because  part 2 is educating people of all races and ethic backgrounds that African Americans are not one dimensional!   The "black elite" has always existed in this country and they have for the most part been raised to give back to the AA community.  Did you see how many generations of physicians and family members with graduate degrees the one woman had in her family.  Jack & Jill the Tuxedo Ball is not everyone's world but neither is the hood.

Part 1 portrayed the African American as such a one dimensional race of people it was shallow and superficial.  Part 2 is showing more of our caring, giving and hard working nature as a people. I'm glad CNN has followed up the series with this more substantial report.  I am looking forward to watching again tonight......I watched the 2nd part of Black in America Part 1 only to see if it was going to get better and it did not.
Peace

Hey PC:
I totally agree with everything you said. Sometimes I think we forget that  or maybe don't know that if it were not for that Black Doctor or Black Lawyer or Black owned bank, back in the day, our families would have been in BAD shape. Our parents would NOT have made it. We forget that the "Elite" are the one's that kept our Community together because they had to live there too. Some of us forget or don't know that MLK, Fredrick Douglas, W.E.B. DuBois...were part of the "Black Elite". Oh yes, they give back, but you just won't see them walking around in the "hood" or exploiting Blacks for money like a drug dealer or rapper or even some white entities.

Oh I forgot to answer your question. What I thought of the Tuxedo Ball...it's great . Every race & ethic group in the world has an elite class with elite activities.  Elite Caucasians also have these kind of events to allow their children to have the opportunity to network.  That's one generation passing the tourch to the next...that is the only way African Americans are going to break the glass ceiling because we all know you don't get to the very top with just "working real hard"  you need connections & contacts for the CEO positions!
