..........and they should frown on it.  No different than the concept of 'old' and 'new' money regarding background and lineage.

Their focus is on the "get ahead by education" principle, which I do support, but I'm also of the mindset that you can re-route people to think differently - like Dr. J and Coach John Thompson, and have them use their influence to help change the mindset of others in sports and entertainment.

But sports and entertainment folk are STILL different than the average, everyday run of the mill mofo.  *I* ain't the least bit interested in working any community projects outside of my own community, personally.  you can re-route thinking but sometimes it's as hard as herding cats!!!

I'll bet most of those folks were/are in Jack 'n Jill and the Boule.  Have you ever read any of Stephen Carter's books?  LOL  There is also another one called "Our Kind of People" that tells it all about the Black upper crust....

n'uh uh, but it sounds like an interesting read.   the only thing i've ever heard about any of em was years ago, my best friend was dating a boy in college whose parents belonged to jack n' jill.  he brings her home to meet his folks and shortly thereafter she breaks up with him.  i say what the deuce she says joe's mother said she's a very nice girl dear but too dark to be admitted to the club.  i said what'd he say? she said he didn't say anything, he didn't agree with her but isn't gonna change her opinion so he didn't say anything.   could be one lady's personal view could be an *unwritten* club rule, either way it was enough for her that a woman who would make that statement sought out that organization.

Some in the "elite" class and some in the "hood" class still subscribe to the no darker than a brown paper bag!!!!!!!!!!  That's pure slave mentality no matter what socioeconomic class you claim.

ita.  but the hood isn't trying to be exclusive.

eta the ironic part is that the girl joe's mother thought of as too dark is phylicia rashad's complexion.

OMG - the dreaded "paper bag" test!  ROFL!!  I shouldn't laugh - I was touted as the "dark" on in my family and I know what it feels like to be rejected because of the darkness of my skin.As a result, I never dated anyone dark in my young life.  Funny that my hubby is very dark and my family embraces him!  Some people do change.

This same type of attitude sadly played itself out in the earlier days of our beloved greek letter sororities and fraternities.  It has long been discussed and believed that if you came close to the brown paper bag shade, you were not permitted entrance to certain groups.  Spike Lee's "School Daze", pays homage to the wannabe's and the jiggaboos mentality that some perceive the greeks to have still in this millenium.
