Hello BAF,

My name is Ashley I am a 20 years old from Wilmington, De. I have been a memeber of OH for a while but am new to the message boards. I am currently pre-op for my surgery which is July 31st (WHOOOO HOOOO!!!!!) and I was wondering what reccomendations would you give someone as new as I am when it comes to our new tummies and dealing with coming from african american and hispanic families (knowing that ALL of our gatherings are surrounded by food). And what did you guys eat in the first month post op? Thankx BAF!!

welcome

for the first month, i would suggest skipping large social gatherings because you won't be able to eat "normal" enough to feel normal.  once you are further out and have no food restrictions, hanging out with friends and family is easy. you'll be able to find something you can eat and you can still sit there with a plate and feel as normal as everyone else.  of course your plate won't have much on it but at least you'll feel half way normal.

its a mind game really.  i'm sure that after i post this 20 other people will say that they had no such problems socializing around food early out.  i'm sure somebody had surgery right before thanksgiving and had to get through that.

you'll find that experiences here vary.  good luck with yours.

Hi Ashley, WELCOME!!

I know exactly what you mean, me being Puerto Rican and my husband African-American, about the food and the family gatherings. It was the hardest thing that I have ever dealt with, but I kept in mind what my goal was with the WLS. It was to get healthy and get off all meds (insulin, blood pressure, cholesterol, asthma and sleep apnea), which I now am 44 lbs lighter and OFF everything 3 months post-op, WOOOHOOO .  I cooked the big meals like always for Mother's Day, Memorial Day and the 4th of July and I had my soft foods & protein shakes. The first month you're not going to feel much like eating anyway, besides your new tummy will let you know, so listen to it. It's not going to be easy, but keep your GOAL in mind and you WILL get through it.

Welcome Ashley,

In the beginning you are not gonna want to eat anything at all. You will get full just looking at it at least I did. Just as Sam says try to avoid large family dinners you will not want to eat anyway and when you do it is little of nothing. I had my Surgery done in October and had Thankgiving that yr at my house. I cooked the dinner and did not eat any of it. I was on a soft diet so not turkey n dressing for me and forget about the desert (I wasn't going to get sick from the sugar) so after dinner I made everyone take everything with them deserts included. But you will have to play it by ear. In the beginning I got full from just sipping water. But CONGRATS on your surgery. Feel free to post at anytime. If you have any questions you can send me a message we are all here to help each other out.
