gurl i'm shocked.  at all of it, the poll results - folk think he should be taken away? and then what?  sure there's something you can do for your child before it gets to emergency status but that something is only so much.   feed him egg whites in the morning but you can't everywhere with him the rest of the day.  in this mother's situation i don't think it's abusive, i'm saddened by her helplessness.     the other thing is there comes an age when you can't (shouldn't?) be held physically responsible for your child.  if i wanted some cake after my parents went to bed i was having some, period.

I agree Marlo cause even if she locked the cabinet and fridge she cant be with him every min monitoring what he ate......Unfortunatly single parent homes you gotta do what you must to keep the lights on and the children fed ...which for her was working shift work which means she wasnt always around to see what her son was up to

I think this is a very slippery slope.
I could *almost* understand it more if this was a small child.
A teenager, not so much.
I used to always cringe when I would see those 190lb 3 year olds on Maury. There is only so much you can do. I was always big but not *that* big. And yeah, I used to sneak food as a kid too, usually when everyone was asleep.

@ those 190lb 3 year olds on Maury...

That was a friggin sight to see, Yo.  Those kids used to look like the Michelin Man with all of those rolls and whatnot on them, struttin around the house in a pair of Depends and a 10 year olds t-shirt.

When this story first came out it was said that this boy was mentally challenged which puts this into a different category.  A normal child should be able to regulate his portions... he might be big but not that big.  The mom could be charged with neglect in a situation like that.
