Hello to everyone, I am having my last consultation with Dr. MacDonald on 7-27-09 at 11:00am and then my surgery will possibly be as soon as the first week of August.  I have heard horrow stories and I have heard good things.  I would like to know what the realistic side of the surgery is from someone who has had it recently (within the last 6 months).

I've had no issues at all at 5 months out.  While your concerns are to be expected, it won't do you any good to focus on what can go wrong.  There's no shortage of info on possible complications and stats on their frequency.  I won't try and list them.  I will just say that the competancy of your surgeon and your state of health are key.

You've done your homework on the doctor by now and I assume you are satisfied.  If you are not yet on a pre op diet put yourself on one.  If there are no health issues that preclude this, start having a low carb (no more than 5g per serving) protein shake each day and cut the carbs especially sugar.

The protein strenghthens the body and promotes healing post op.  The reduced carbs shrinks the liver curing or reducing fatty liver disease which can complicate wls.  My daughter and I both have similar pre op instructions with two different surgeons.  We each had wls on a Monday and resumed normal activity by Friday of the same week.  It may just be we have strong healing genes, but I'm sure being fortified with the extra protein for several weeks and having small livers without fatty issues helped tremendously.

You sound like an obssesor just like me.  Don't go there please.  Check out the August 09 surgery board.  Those with dates close to yours will help talk you off the ledge when the build up to your big day has you going nuts.  You all have the same issues at the same time.  I still visit the board for my surgury date even 5 months out.

Congratulations on your comming surgery and good luck.  You will be just fine.

I thank you for being honest with your thoughts.  As for the sugars, when I found that I had diabetes, I quickly eliminated that, as well as the carbs.  I have heard nothing but goodness about my doctor and he is extremely kind.  I will try and do the Protein Drink thanks
