true or false?

Frankie and Neffe are getting a show and Tiny & Toya already have a show.  When recently asked about those shows and the other stuff that BET puts on the air, I said that they specialize in lowest common denominator programming.

What do you think?

I have been blasted for this before - BUT - I think it IS just that.  Mainstream network has The Bachelor/Bachelorette - we get Flavor Flav and I love New York.  Mainstream has The Apprentice, we get the Hustler.

Some argue that those shows speak to 'Our' experience and create a concept that we can relate to - I challenge that with why  must we simply relate, why can't we challenge ourselves to elevate and educate?  Why must the banal be entertainment while the exceptional is an overlooked footnote?  what happened to modeling what you see portrayed rather than the portrayal mocking and satirizing a small part of the masses?

I saw the pitch for that next spin of hot ghetto mess and just shook my head - at least Keyshia Cole had sense enough NOT to renew her contract for another season of that show - but low and behold - the two that made the show the 30min snippet of trifling behavior will now have their very own vehicle to spotlight their lack of.......you fill in the blanks for that.

I only watch BET when they run a movie I am interested in.

I agree MM...........that is royal crown foolishness in my book. On one hand you feel like you need to support the station/ratings (maybe that's just me cause I work in advertising) but on the other hand I feel like most of their programs are a  disgrace. I feel embarassed with half the shows BET has.

Sam,

I rarely look at BET anymore. I did not watch the awards last night either. I figured I would catch it on my computer later.  Its a shame because I really like to support black business. When they decided to take the BET news off the air at one point....I just stopped watching...I don't even know if they have the news back u*****t. I simply got tired of seeing all the rump shaking videos and other smut whenever I would turn there.  On a more personal note, I feel strongly that if main stream media is not going to profile the plight of missing and exploited black children....BET should have been trying to fill some of that gap.  I guess I can't blame them for the problem altogether though...just like  I can't blame mainstream media....its the viewers who determine what shows are televised.....airtime is expensive.  It does speak to us as a society and is very discouraging to say the least.

Don't forget BET is no longer a BLACK business!  Johnson sold it several years ago its now just a white mans minstrel show.

I was wandering how many people knew it was no longer black owned. The rating was there they sold and made their money and gone.

I think it's a disgrace to be portrayed in such an ignorant way. People of other races (WP) already look down on us as it is. So I don'****ch or support it at all because not all black people act this way but that's how we are portrayed.
Just my 2 cents.

We watched the awards - "tried" to watch it together w/the kids.  It was a BIT much & we turned it.  I thought MUCH more of Jamie Foxx (and others) than to have all the swearing, sex-talk, pelvic-thrusts, etc.  We've got kids that we're trying to raise the right way - in the long run, brains are more powerful than beauty.  Very disappointed w/BET.
