What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. The celebration of June 19 was coined "Juneteenth" and grew with each generation.

Historically, Juneteenth celebrations have been a time of reassurance, prayer, and family gatherings. It is traditionally celebrated with a large, all-day potluck served outdoors. Many of today's Juneteenth celebrations still include a potluck get together to celebrates African American freedom while also encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures.
