New Post-op Tip of The Day
Today's tip is about adding new foods to your diet. Once you've been cleared by your surgeon and nutritionist to add foods to your diet, don't go crazy and just start adding everything. I know that it feels like you've been without food for a long time but you really haven't. Think of your pouch, sleeve, banded tummy and switched stomach as a newborn's tummy. Would you give a newborn a steak one day, ground beef the next day, turkey the next day, fried food, fatty food, hard to digest food or any food that is hard to digest? No you wouldn't. Beef is one of the hardest meats to digest so you might want to hold off on that for a few months. If you eat chicken, you probably want to bake it and add some gravy so it won't be dry. Baked fish or grilled fish and shrimp is great protein sources and is easy to digest. Don't worry about a side dish at first because you will only be able to eat 2-3 ozs. and that should be protein dense foods. Once you're able to eat more protein, then add a side dish and think about that choice as well. Choose veggies that are rich in iron, calcium and potassium because everything that you eat should have a purpose. You had this surgery so that you can eat to live instead of living to eat. Plan your meals and research the nutrients to help you with your choices. Make this tool work for you.
