Okay, I did not have time to get the picture before the bird flew off.....but the girls are so upset.....there was a brown bird with white face....they say he was the size of our dog (I think it was smaller)....I only caught him in flight....but he killed and ate the bird in our backyard. He was big....and that was so rare. They are like, "Mommy what was that!?" I'm like, I dunno! I wanted to say it was an owl LOL, but I know better. What could it have been? I know not an eagle; right?!

Two days in a row, we had deer in the yard! and the girls want to know can THAT bird eat little dogs?! They scared to take Ras out.

We researched and they selected the ferruginous hawk.  What is your thoughts on this?

Hi Dedee...I don't think it would have been a Ferruginous Hawk...because it's "typically" a western bird as you can see on the range map below.  (However..."birds have wings and tend to use them".)  And plus...large hawks like the Ferruginous generally don't have the ability to take small birds.

If I was to take a guess...I would think that the bird you saw was possible an immature "Cooper's Hawk".
