A cautionary tale

For those unfamiliar, a samosa is an Indian appetizer made with spiced mashed potatoes and a few green peas stuffed into a pastry shell and deep fried.  It is one of the most aromatic, decadent and delicious concoctions ever created.  The spices are to die for.

Well, I’d been craving a taste of samosa for weeks, and last night I gave in and bought a carryout order (2) of them.  I’m almost 5 years post op and have maintained my weight well and have rarely had problems with carbs.
What would it hurt this one time, right?

I then proceeded to eat not one, but both of them - creamy white mashed potatoes deep fried in a white flour pastry shell, OK?   No protein.  Got thirsty and had a frosty cool ****tail made with crystal light, vodka and a splash of pineapple juice a little bit later.    Still, no protein.
Then I went to bed full, happy and just a little bit tipsy.

I woke up a couple of hours later drenched in sweat.  My bed sheets were literally soaking wet.  I was shaking and felt so weak that I could hardly stand up.  At first I thought I was having hot flashes.  The sweat was pouring off me. You could see it pooling up and rolling down my skin.  My husband suggested that I take a sponge bath to cool down.  I did that and then stood in front of a box fan that was blowing from the AC vent.  I was still sweating and shaky. He fixed a big glass of ice water for me and after I drank that I started cooling down a little bit, but I was still shaky.  I spread a bath towel over my side of the bed and climbed back in.  I felt like I needed something sweet, so I ate a few calcium chews that were on the bedside table.  Within a couple of minutes I felt perfectly normal and had a good night’s sleep.

My pouch put me in check.

What did I learn?

1.  I don’t need to drink alcohol.
2.  I can tolerate small amounts of high glycemic index carbs, but if I make a meal of them, I will suffer.
3.  ALWAYS eat protein first.

And most important:   Never become complacent!
Even though I’ve been post op for a long time, stuff can still happen if I'm not careful.

Now what I'm getting from this is to not eat Indian food.  Is that the lesson?

Girl, you know what?  I passed right over the beef samosas on the menu and went straight for the traditional ones with the potatoes.   There's just something about that fluffy mouth feel and the combination of garam masala, coriander and ginger that is absolutely heavenly.  Whe you bite down into it, the aroma is so exotic.  I hadn't experienced that taste for so long that I think I got a little bit carried away.  I'll probably have it again someday but I'll only take a couple of bites instead of eating 2 whole ones.

Hi Blessed,

I have had a few similar experiences .... always after I've had a meal of

simple carbs. Having diabetes, this used to happen often before wls.

This samosa thing does sound good though.  lol

Glad you are feelng better..... sounds like, lesson well learned.
