just curious...why is ice eating a sign of iron deficiency?

Crazy, but true....ice eating (among other cravings--for me it is ice and chalk) is a symptom of anemia. It is from a condition known as PICA. PICAis a disorder where a person craves thing of non-nutritional value.

People with sickle-cell (like my brother) or the trait (like me and the other siblings) have these cravings. Only, my brother has them daily! I have gastric ulcers also and when my iron count drops, I want to eat on CRUSHED ice.....

When I was pregnant with the girls....OH MY! I wanted real chalk! So bad until I made me some damn chalk with flour and water.....heated it.....and had a field day.

Eating ice, chalk, flour, or even pure dirt is not strange to people with anemia.

I focus not on my disabilty; my focus is on my ABILITIES.

Dedee,

The chalk reminds me of back in the day when people would eat Argo starch.  I remember at one time most of my family was eating the stuff.  Some or all of us were probably anemic but some especially the younger ones were eating it because it was in vast supply and the stuff didn't taste half bad.  Of course, now that I think about it something was definitely wrong with that whole scenario....a whole family eating starch???...something used to crease your pants. Dayum...that definitely was PICA.

That does sound right. Before I had my hysterectomy I was extremely anemic. I ate a 5lb bag of ice a day.

Is this, like, the 50th ice question you have asked????

Did you get your iron checked from the last time you posted about ice and got told about the iron thing - what have YOU done with your doc to try to figure this out?

I'm asking cause you keep asking questions and getting feedback - I'm curious what you are doing with it.

Oh - and while you been making ass shaking videos and whatnot - how's your exercise and eating plan been working out?  Yep - I ain't forget and I'm holding you ACCOUNTABLE!!!!  So - TELL IT!

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......
