Hi,

I am 4 weeks post op and wanted to know if I could get a relaxer? I am african american and I am in need of a retouch. Can anyone share their experiences with getting a relaxer, with having the RNY? Just wanted to make sure before I do it.

It shouldn't be a problem. I don't remember having any problems with a relaxer right after surgery.  I remember in the beginning I used to use a protien shampoo and take biotion supplement pills. I don't think all that worked.  It's really about staying up on your protien to keep your hair healthy.

I got a relaxer 2 weeks after surgery.  You should be fine.

Personally, please make sure your hair is healthy enough for a relaxer. With all of the Anesthesia and the stress in which your body is going through you maybe susceptible to even more hair loss. My hairdresser wouldn't put a relaxer in for 2 months after surgery just to make sure there was no additional hair loss. She flat ironed the hell put my hair and deep conditioned it. My hair loss was very miniinal from the surgery

Even when you decide to do the touch up.  I would use the mildest version of the relaxer.  Not sure what you are using now. I also hear that folks are using biotin to help with hair loss.  Nice to see you on BAF...take care.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I am going to talk to my hairdresser and ask for the mildest relaxer possible.
