Hello
i am having surg next Friday on the 29th and I weigh 270 and stand 5'6" and wanted to know about the sagging skin.  Is it a must to have skin removed, breast lifts, or tummy tucks? Did anyone lose alot and not have to have any of these things done can I work on it just by working out?

thanks

1.  Best wishes on your surgery and recovery.

2.  Having skin removed, breast lifts, tummy tucks...is not a must in most case, but a personal perference.

3.  Some can live with the excess skin because for them the overall gain of their health outweighs the excess skin. For some, they find that they feel worst about their body after the weight loss than before and so the removal of the excess skin is a requirement for them to be able to go forward with their life (mental)

4.  for some, no matter how much they work out, they will still have excess skin, it can not be help, it depend on many things...how long you been overweight, if there is elasticity left in the skin, genetics

5.  Working out is not going to guarantee that you don't have excess skin but working out has so many other benefits.

Again, best of wishes

I think insurance companies should be more open about adding the recostrucitve surgery(breats lifts, tummy tucks) as another facet of the bariatric surgery, because sometimes o matter what you do, how much you work out, the sagging skin is gonna be there. cuz for real i am lamenting the fact that i have noooo boobs anymore and that my bra is only holding in skin, and no matter how many crunches i do, i am not seeing the results cuz the skin is in the way. I'm sure i aint the only one....

You will go down just as you are built before you lost weight.  I have problems with my arms and legs.  I never had a big stomach and don't have much excess skin there now.  But my legs and arms are terrible.  I am able to deal with it with spanx and covering up.  I am so glad with the amount of weight that i have lost that it does not bother me.

I went from 342 to 230.  I went from 2x top to a Large top.  I also went from a 30 size pants to a 20 or 18 size pants.  If I don't lose another lb. I am satified with everything.
 pre-op weight - 342 | current weight- 236 | Goal weight- 170

I have lost over a 100 lbs since I started this journey.  I am happy and proud of myself.

If you have back ,neck  or should pain from large breast document it now and any skin problems from extra skin document it with your Dr. each and every time you have a problem.I did and my insurance will  now pay for a panni and breast lift I'll have to pay for the tummy tuck my self if I want it. but hay two out of three aint bad.  I lost 120 pound and the loose skin wasn't a problem for me as far as sagging it was the rash/infections that I kept getting under the skin that was the problem. but the skin problem is better then the weight by far. good luck

I am about ten weeks out, I have been working out on the wii fit and I just got a new game called EA Sports Active and oh my goodness this game will tone your skin and muscles like going to the gym. I love it. My tummy is now showing signs that the skin will not be too much of an issue. My legs are toning because before I workout I rub this stuff by Aveeno that tightens the skin up. I have been doing this for about two weeks and it is really working. I love the wii. If you don't have one it is a good investment.

There are several factors which determine the degree of excess skin.  As others have mentioned, genetics have a role here.

In having met many, many fellow WLS folks, some other commonalities seem to be at play as well.  It seems that the likelyhood of less excess skin seems to belong to those who are young, had a history of athletic activity, and have been overweight for the shortest time.  For example, someone who was not overweight as a child, participated in HS sports or excercised regularly, then gained 100-130ish pounds and  had WLS is less likely to have as much excess skin as someone who was 1) overweight for a longer time 2) had WLS later in life, as their skin had more time to loose elasticity, or 3) was more than 130-140 pounds overweight.

This is based on my own conversations over the years with people explaining their journey, nothing scientific.
