Good topic. Over the years, I have taught myself to become fluent in man talk. "You are too high maintenance" = You make me feel insecure, can you come down to my level?
Men prefer to approach a woman solo because then he does not have to deal with the "Wolf Pack". You know that sometimes your girls can be the biggest hater if they are not being approached. They will be quick to point out everything they deem is wrong with him. LOL
And I agree that if you are really into a man you could care less what your friends have to say. Of course people are going to gripe when things are bad. We rarely tell all the great things. But in our hearts we know when the good outweighs the bad, so that is why we stick with the person. It is on the individual to decide when/if they want to leave a person.
