I hope you have a copy of your billing agreement with your doc. I'd notify them of their error and request a refund. If they give you a hard time I'd suggest a lawyer to help you play hardball. Sounds like insurance fraud.
I was a self pay as well and the agreed upon amount I paid very clearly states that that would cover my surgeon's anesthesiologist's, pre-op labs, and all hospital fees including an overnight stay up to 24 hrs.
Good luck.

What Gigilani said. Make sure you have copies of the bills and the isurance explanation of benefits. You were cheated are most definately due a refund. Having worked with medical collections I know how inefficient their systems can be.
There may be someone at the hospital now scratching his head about the overpayment on your account. They don't go after those the way they do balances due. Half the time they just consider it a mis posting that will eventually be reapplied to the right account. Go get your money. Best of luck.

V'N MY RNY. WORKING FOR ME BECAUSE I WORK FOR IT.
This happened to me. I was self pay and the hospital billed for a portion of my surgery. My insurance paid it. I contacted the billing dept and they refunded my money.
I received a specific breakdown for my surgery... x amount hospital fees, x amount doctor fee and x amount anesthesia fee. My insurance paid more than what I paid so the hospital refunded what I paid. My insurer had an exclusion for WLS too but they will pay if only certain things are billed.
I would work with the hospital before I contact the insurance company. The insurance company is going to want all their money back.
