I am trying to research on the net but can't find these two things:

1 - Do antihistimes cause the same bleeding complications that NSAIDs can/do?

2 - how long does it take the body to process, say, 150-200mg of antihistime through?

PS - I know I spelled it wrong, but you know what i meant.

I'm not a nurse either, but I took a pharmacology course a long time ago.  I know that there are different types of antihistamines and they work differently and have different loading and maintenance dosages.  You would probably get the best answer from a pharmacist or maybe from a Physician's Desk Reference  www.pdr.com

Regarding you question about bleeding complications, one class of antihistamines is actually used to treat ulcers.

Aight here ya go.  ANTIHISTAMINES can lead to bleeding post operatively due to the fact it can cause your platelet level to decrease, thus causing thrombocytopenia (google it).

Not sure which med you're taking but it can take anywhere from 3-24 hrs for it to be processed by your body.  If you give me the name of the med you're taking I can give you more detailed info.

It's Diphenhydramine HCl - just the sleep aid.

Well lucky for you I happen to have my drug book handy.  Essentially you're taking Benadyl to sleep.  There are so many better things out there, just so you know.  anyways it begins to work within 15 minutes.  Its peak performance is within 1-4 hrs and duration of its effect is 6-8 hrs.

I'd stick with your Drs advice of avoiding it before surgery.  Structurally its very similar to local anesthetics.
