Yes, most of his followerer were black...but they were also loyal followers of his Temple.  He was able to isolate and do the mind control before they even knew what hit them.  This is why he had to take them away to Guyana to do the worst of his dastardly deeds.  I am sure he knew that once Babae started talking to folks in her community about what he was doing....the Temple would have been shut down.  I think it would have eventually collapsed here and most of those folks would not have drunk the koolaid. Of course..this is just my thought.

Hey MM:
I think that we tend NOT to put people on to much of pedestol, our history has shown us that it's to easy to fall off. Now, we do tend to give white folks the benefit of our high praise for those that tend to need to prop someone up. Have you noticed that Black folks don't even cheer at sporting events like white folks. You look around in the stands and rich white folks be yelling their butts off and Black folks be just laid back...that's why Atlanta has been said to have the worse fans in the NBA, most of them are Black and they just are not going to cheer and chant and hoop it up like Boston...fans. We will support entertainers... and preachers and the like but most Black folks are not going to follow them to "hell", whatever/whereever that is. Black folks liked Michael Jackson (in the day) but no way would we give him the Elvis treatment. Hell, if Obama did something stupid, we'd say, well, what you expect, let's give him another chance before we push him to the curb; but for sure our hearts won't be broken.

My personal belief is that white folks have a more "utopian" outlook of the world, and that in a sense they want to see the "Savior" in the eyes of these people/person they hold up...See, they ain't been under the pain of their own lash before, nor has disappointment been their bed-fellow for so long. I think Black folks on the WHOLE are not extremist, we kinda stay in the middle of the road/balance. But then that philsophy also stymies creativity, passion, and fosters a "herd" mentality. Those Blacks that have shunned that philsophy and in-fact embraced a more "utopian" view of Life have usually succeeded beyond "group" expectations, thus also causing resentment or their "Blackness" questioned.
Bottom line: Blacks just don't like someone "lording" over us because we dealt with it for soooo long (which causes many of us to have Bad Attitudes.)

up on the east coast was a cult leader by the name of dwight york....  he was black, his movement took may shapes over a span of about 30 years and was finally convicted in 2005 for child sexual molestation(i think) and will be in jail for the rest of his life. he was based out of broklyn, then moved him and his followers to upstate new york and then finally out to a farm in Georgia... built pyramids and everything... yeah that nukka was crazy.... so unfortunatley it aint just a white thing.... oh and JIM jone's followers, a great deal of them were black.

Also malcolm X himself, after leaving the Nation of ISlam, labelled the group a cult.... so i guess its relative.... what may be a religion to some, may be a cult i others... somebody told me i was i a cult.... i had to laugh....

Hey There:
In the Holy Quran, didn't GOD say that religion was a cult that HE granted to our father Abraham? So, what I get out of that is that ALL religion is a "cult" because one does NOT need it to get to GOD or to worship GOD. That's why Isha said,"Knock, and the door shall be opened..." Religion, in that sense being a bridge to GOD for those that need it. NOW in many cases religion is not even a bridge to GOD but has become a god (the rituals, traditions....like if one does not pray a certain way, GOD won't hear them or dress a certain way GOD won't accept righteousness, or if you don't get fully dipped you ain't right or a Woman can't preach... Yes, that's CULT - URE). Just My thoughts.

You are so right I didn't see your post before I

made mine I didn't read all the posts

But this is the cult in Georgia that I was talking

about in my post  "The United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors"

lead by Malachi York.  He was convicted of molesting like

14 boys and girls all children of his members.  Yep got 135 years.

I've known of a few blacks involved in cults but they are usually on a much lower level and smaller/self contained group.  If they're poor we never hear too much about them.

In general we only hear about them on a national level if there is some horrible allegation or complaint against them that launches a full fledge investigation that yeilds real evidence.

There was a group in South Georgia 4/5 years back that owned a lot of land with some pyramid shaped buildings, large compound, leader fathered children many by minors, lots of wealth and heavily armed. The allegation of being heavily armed is what brought in the police. Eventually they shut them down and the leader got a long prison term.

Also you remember the majority of the Jim Jones followers were black.

i think the difference between the TYPES of cults black folks get into and white folks get into, is when that whole suicide thing gets into it.... Black folks aint up to killing themselves just cuz you said so.... Even with the Jim Jones thing..... you come to find out that the MAJORIZTY of those people who drank the cyanide-laced Koolaind were forced. if you noticed, they used a HANDFUL of loyal people to give it to the elderly and babies first... some people tried running away while others were dying around them, but were met with Jim Jones goons armed to the teeth..... in any case.... i dont see alot of Black folks doing suicide pacts or anything.....

Hey everyone,
I think it may be easier for someone to get in a cult based on things missing in their lives.  For me, you can call prostitution a form of a cult.  Think about these older men who pray on young girls who don't know who they are and lack confidence....  Perfect prey for a pimp.  They turn these girls out via drugs, beating and submission.  Some even do it in the name of 'love' or in the name of Jesus.

If you think about our history as a people coming from the slave ships to America, we as people have always looked for someone to come and get us.  Some of those in slavery could have walked away at any time but, did not as they were - waiting for someone to rescue them or someone to tell them what to do.  That slave mentality was 'yes massah' 'no massah' not think for yourself.

This is why it is SO important that we teach our kids to think for themselves!
