OT: Just not a black folk thing?

Hey fam - I was watching one of those MSN documentaries or something last night and it was about Cults - you know, the Jim Jones kind?  They talked about the brainwashing, blah, blah, blah.  Every example was white folk.

I can't recall hearing about a black cult - one where mofos thought one nicca in particular was their messiah and gave all their worldly goods to him and followed him - how come that is? (yea, I know that is a jacked up question lol)

Why don't WE do the cult thing?  Or have I just missed the examples that have come through?

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

PTL Club in the 80's
TD Jakes in the 90's, the year 2000 and beyond...

Double_Ayy, I was just about to say the same thing...we call our cults churches.
I do go to church, but I don't get sucked in to every single thing that is said. There are still some beliefs I have that go against any church...like being *for* gay marriage.

You forget:

Jim Jones ( i know he was white but still)

We have cults just not as open as the white folks.

I think that cults thrive when folks are isolated or live in isolated areas with very little outside influences....like in the Waco and Guyana scenarios.  Now you know that most black folk are not going to be going off to no isolated areas.  First off...we black women...need to be able to get somewhere to get our nails done or our weave tightened up! And the black men are not ones...to just sitting around a dayum camp fire...shooting the shioot. Most would much rather be at the barber shop getting their fades and talking trash. LOL!  We need to be upwardly mobile and all over the place....not too much isolation jumping off in our neighborhoods. Now if one of us do happen to wander off to the Camp D...and come back talking about....gathering up all their shioot, packing up the kids and moving to Montana.....WE (black folks) are going to go straight INTERVENTION on their azz!

I think it does happen just on a smaller less publicized scale. There is often cult mentality when we seek and obey the voice of man and not the voice of God. All of the elderly *****ly on televison to get their church on. Robert Tilton is a perfect examlpe asking for this amount for a prayer cloth or just send me the money. Some people are good at disguising themselves so they appear to be God sent. I have always said let your spirit be your guide. If it makes you uncomfortable then pull back the covers and expose what is not right.
