New Post-op Tip of The Day
I know this is late but it's been a looooooong day. I will be out of town a couple of days visiting my brother in Atlanta. Today's tip is a spin-off of GorgeousIsa's thread yesterday titled "Water, Water, Water"
I had no idea that so many of y'all were not getting in your fluids. This is very important not only for weight loss but for hydration. The minimum that you should be drinking is 64 ozs. but you should be setting a goal of 80 ozs. especially since hot weather is right around the corner and if you exercise and sweat you will need even more.
Coffee, tea or any other caffeinated beverage does not count toward your daily intake and you have to double your water intake to make up for any caffeine you drink per my NUT's guidelines. Caffeine dehydrates you and steals calcium from your bones so if you drink coffee or tea then decaffeinated is the way to go.
SF kool-aid, Crystal Light or Walmart brand packets are great to flavor your water at first to get you to drink but it will be super sweet at first so go easy on the packets. You want to eventually get to the point where you drink just plain water because the flavor packets tend to trigger cravings for sweets.
When you are an early post-op, you may have to trick yourself into drinking water. I started with the little bitty water bottles because the 20 oz ones were too overwhelming. I would then drink every commercial.
Do whatever it takes to get your fluids because a wls pt gets dehydrated quickly and it's expensive to get re hydrated with a hospital stay when drinking water could have done it. Remember to stop drinking 30 mins. before you eat and don't drink again until 30 mins. after you eat. I also keep water on my bedside table to drink during the night.
So newbies, vets and everyone in between get your water in.
