Afternoon BAF, I have a question about feeding your family after wls
Hi,
My question is, I have hubby and three boys at home 18,17 & 12 they are all really serious eaters. So I just wondered after your initial period of liquids and puree's do you just eat what they are eating in a really small portion, or do you make something else?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

Well I am a new pre op and I can say that even though I have the go ahead to eat regular foods there are lot of things that do not agree with me. It was advised to me to try one new thing at a time to see what it is I can tolerate and what I can not. IMO you really won't be eating exactly everything they are eating right off the back. If you have a NUT you need to speak with him/her about what is the best eating plan for you after your pureed stage. They will be better able to assist you with that question.

Hi Hope Girl!
Well I think it really depends on what you are cooking them. You definitely want to stay away from foods with a high fat and sugar content. Plus you must make sure you are getting your protein in. Honestly, I know that preWLS I cooked with a lot of bread, sugar, butter, grease, fatback, lard....sorry I got carried away....but you might know what I mean. So as long as you are making sure that you are being mindful not to use a lot of these items in your cooking you might be okay. Hope this helps a little. Nice to see you on BAF!
ETA: Please check with your NUTritionist regardless of what you plan to do.

I have changed the way I prepare foods. If I am endeavoring to be healthy, I don't want my children to be unhealthy....so basically EVERYONE in the house had had to change their eating habits....in actuality though...I have been doing this since I started on this journey...because I feel it doesn't make sense to continue to allow my family to be unhealthy.
Although I don't eat EVERYTHING they eat....I make sure that I cook them low low-fat, high protein meals...just because its good for them and because 10 - 15 years from now, I don't want them growing up having a weight problem and have to go down the same road I just went down.
They can still be serious eaters...doesn't mean their eating has to be full of empty calories and high-fat foods.
Good luck with it!

Hey, I think it can go both ways once you are able to move on to solid foods. You can eat what they have depending, on what you cook.
I'm 2 months post- op and I avoid rice, pastas and fried foods. By choice I really don't desire those things anymore.
Here's an example your family wants fried chicken, Rice, beans and a vegetable.
Either fry it bake it or grill( your meat) You can eat your chicken, beans and vegetable minus the rice. But i find it once you have your surgery things are different your taste change and there will be things you can't tolerate anymore.
But once your discharged from the hospital your doctor pretty much gives you a guide line to go by of what foods are ok for you to eat.
I notice that even though we're going through a life change by having surgery.
It doesn't mean that your family will change they're eating habits. that quick!
At the end of the day it's up to you to choose what your going to eat. But if you think you'll cook something that your new stomach won't agree with you then don't try to eat it.
Take Care

God is good all the time!
Once I started eating real food again, they had to eat what I eat. Ocassionally I will cook something separate for myself, but I've pretty much gotten the rest of the family on the band wagon. I just make sure there is a lot of meat. I've switched to grilling the meat; either on the George Foreman or I have my husband girill up a whole bunch of stuff at a time on the gas grill. The key is getting him to fire that baby up!
What's really funny is that since I've been losing weight, now everyone else is trying to keep up with me. Apparently they think I am winning.

They can be serious eaters in a healthy way. Bake instead of frying, lite salt instead of regular, and other substitutes in your meal preparations. I was so 'tunnelled vision" that I just would not dare to be tempted during those times I had to slightly venture away. Initially it broke my heart to see food being thrown away but I got past it.
