We have had several cases of the swine flu in our (Area)county. They report this after the fact and for what I have been hear all of the cases have been kids.  One school Middle School sends out a letter after the kid has returned  back to schools with a Dr"s OK. They are saying the can not release the kids name that I understand but how can you just wait and see with out telling the parents.

Mad because my grand baby missed school and her school call her step-grandmother and asked her where she was and how was she doing. Still don't know if one of the kids
was in her school are not. I just don't understand them at all. I know they don't won't people to panic but they have the right to do during the time a kid is sick.

My grand baby was home because her mother(PG) and was ill herself that day and didn't get her to school.  Why?
I think it is something they call HEPA not letting out people business and personal info to the public.
But I would have love to have know about this before hand
and not after???? stupid.

May not be where I want to be but I glad to be where I'm at.
Working at getting the rest of the way.

Hi Kathleen,

I can definitely understand your frustration. Unfortunately, its difficult for school personnel to tell who's sic****il the child develops symptoms....and then they are not allowed to disclose the medical info of the child under HIPAA as you stated.  As a grandparent, the only thing you can do is encourage your grandchildren to wash their hands regularly when in school. Even if they could take some of the handiwipes with them that might be good to do as well.  Truth of the matter is that anyone could be walking around with the Swine Flu...so not only in school...its good to practice these precautions every where.  Just keep an eye on your kids...the best thing to do is monitor and catch any symptoms early so that they can be treated. I am sure you all will be okay. Hope you have a great weekend.

HIPAA won't allow them to disclose that information.  And think, if they did what insane people may do to 'protect' their kids.  Of course a sane person would just let their children not be around those infected until it passes.  But an insance person may cause them harm.

My little sister goes to Newberry College and does work study as a teachers aide at Newberry Academy (one of the only spots in SC that has the swine flu).  She was sick for two days with body aches and sore throat. Although she has been home for two weeks now (and JUST getting sick) I took her to prompt care to get checked (THIS HAPPENED TODAY AS A MATTER OF FACT).  The doctor there had such a bad attitude and rolled her eyes when my sister even mentioned Newberry and the swine flu.  I know they get annoyed when an 'epidemic' happens and they are flooded with patients...but that is what you too the hippocratic oathe for chic!  Sorry , had to vent that.
