Puzzled.....

OK I've lurking back and forth between sites trying to find what surgery I think is best for me.  I've changed my mind so many times and I'm ready just to make a decision.  Any hoo I've come back around the bin to RNY and I am in the process of finding peace and excepting that anything can happen and hoping that GOD will see me through.  When I go to the main board or the RNY board I see so many people having so many issues.  When I come here not so much.  I know that our skin color is different but I'm sure our bodies are the same. Is our complication rate truly lower, or do we not speak on those things and pray them away.  This is definitely the more spirituality based board IMHO I enjoy the support and the prayer shout outs that go out for people in need.  But did anyone have problems after surgery, any complications.  I'm scared to have surgery and I'm scared not to.  Any advice or testimonies would be greatly appreciated.  This is such a big step I am confident in my surgeon and his abilities but no one knows what the outcome will be except Jesus himself.  I have a wonderful husband and 2 small children and I need to be here for them.  I've never had to make a decision that was this huge.  Keep me in your prayers to be at peace with my decision.

Moriahjt1;

Welcome! WLS is very serious no matter which one you choose it has to be the best surgery for you! My original surgery in 2005 was the Lap Band, it was not good for me. I gained all my weight and more. January of this year I had the VGS(sleeve) I am doing wonderfully! Loosing weight and living a more healthy life.

Any questions you have just ask!

Just my opinion.......I think black men and women have a certain tolerance for pain. Maybe I'm not saying that right. I think it's drilled in us to be strong, take the good with the bad, whatever doesn't break us will make us stronger. All of that! Sure surgery hurts, some recoveries are hard but at the end of the day the feeling of health and freedom triumphs all of that. I looked at it as obesity now a days can almost be like a death sentence, I wanted to be here in my old age to enjoy everything that my husband and I am working so hard to achieve.

I aint dying early so he can waste it all on young fast women!!

hi there and welcome!!!

I haven't had any complications from RNY - I followed my surgeon's instruction to the letter and did a LOT of prep work to make sure I optimized my healing potential - exercise and vitamin and water routine that was a BEAST!!!!

Interesting that you say we are more 'churchy' over here - LOL - that may very well be a cultural thing - the black church is a central part of our upbringing, in most cases.

As far as the frequency of complications, I would say that you have to look at the entire picture.  Those who end up with complications most of the time had something going on before surgery and it was a risk to begin with or haven't done what they needed to do afterward and ended up with a problem.  However - there are the cases where shiot just HAPPENS.

Good luck to you on your journey - I am a big fan of personally created positive energy - THINK good things - GOOD things happen, and always remember to P.U.S.H - Pray Until Somthing Happens!!!!

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

Hey there....I had complications. And it was a thing of it just Happened! I had NO comorbidities. I chose weightloss surgery to stem all of the bad health and diseases that were in my future. And at 40 years old I was not having that! I am a divorced woman with 3 children who NEED me so I decided to take this very drastic step to eventually save my life.
Now I wasn't afraid per se of the surgery. I heal pretty quickly and very well and after having had 3 c-sections, I figured this would be a walk in the park.

My first surgery was scheduled for 2/19/09. while I was under, my doc was an hour from completion of my RNY (laproscopic) when suddenly for no apparent reason my blood pressure dropped to nothing! So he couldn't finish the surgery because of course now he needed to keep my from dying on that table. There are risks in EVERY surgery....my doc doesn't really know for sure what happened. It freaked everyone out because I was FAT but I was Healthy in the sense that I had no diabetes, blood pressur problems, heart problems, etc. so they were puzzled. Anyhoo...I was on a ventilator for quite a few hours, in ICU for 4 days and it wasnt a good time! But never have I ever thought it had ANYTHING to do with the surgery. the general consensus is that I was dehydrated due to the fact that I had just finished my monthly, I was on liquids 2 days prior to my surgery and then I had to do the bowel prep that consisted of 1 bottle of Magnisum Citrate and 2 Enemas....all that just stripped me...and those things affect everyone differently...

But my testimony is that God brought me out of that and I was able to have my surger completed on 4/13/09. And everything has been going great...I have taken off almost 40 pounds so far and feeling great.

Just Beleive God...NO MATTER WHAT...he is in control!

First of all welcome to BAF!  Just like ADRIENNEF had the lapband back in Aug 2005 and after almost 3 years I had gained back half of the weight I lost.   My doctor had tried to steer me towards having RNY back in 2005 but I refused due to being scared.  Well the lapband just wasn't right for me.  After months and months of contemplating revision, I decided to go with the RNY... best thing I ever did!  I'm almost at goal and feeling better than I did in high school.  Whichever surgery you decide on make sure you have done all of your research and make sure it's the best decision for YOU.  Good luck with your journey.
