Hello Mr. B:

I don't know if there is a difference in the two (self esteem or self image). I think what happens a lot, especially in the USA, because of our culture, is that we confuse self esteem with Bravado or even a false sense of pride. I hear people say all the time, "I Love me some me." What does that mean?
Does it mean that they Love themselves enough to not put their Body through Hell with whatever is "killing them" Alcohol, Food, Laziness...) or get an education to make a better life if necessary or get out of an abusive or demeaning relationship. Does it mean that the person have the confidence to change their Lifestyle, to step outside of the familiar, willing to tell the truth to "power" or even "friends" if it is not popular or can take negative consequences of Life and say, "I've been hit with a punch before and got up, I KNOW I can do it again...if it is hard, I will DO it hard and win."

I guess I am saying that to Me, self esteem= Courage, Confidence, an Intense belief in oneself that goes beyond the superficial, is Tried and True, is self affirmed. Where physical looks matter but the person with high self esteem says, "I'm looking the Best I can right now, so that has to be good enough." High self esteem does not lie to its owner, but recognizes the problems and goes about correcting them. To me, Self Esteem/Self Confidence/"Pride" should be distinguished with Bravado/Swagger/False Pride.

Take the arena of Basketball as an example and say: Self Esteem = Kenny "The Jet", Earvin Johnson, Michael Jordan, Kevin Garnett.
Bravado = Charles Barkley, Jason Kidd, Karl Malone, Pat Ewing.
ALL were/are Great Players, even Hall of Famers...but you have to look beyond the stats and swagger to see it. Self Esteem is like Character and Good Cream>>>it rises to the TOP; Hard times/bad situations/tough decisions... REVEALS IT.

I agree w/ this...b/c even though i'm at the point i'm at in life I still feel there is ALOT of room for improvement. I'm happy b/c of that! I'm not at a place where i'm acceptting less for my health or any of that. I feel like you can fall two ways on your face or on your back. I refuse to fall on face. I'll always get up and make it happen. Thanks ValueMe for the insight.
Smile for me.........

I don't believe you can have high self-esteem if you have a low self image.

SELF ESTEEM: noun
1. a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself; self-respect.
2. an inordinately or exaggeratedly favorable impression of oneself.

SELF IMAGE: –noun
the idea, conception, or mental image one has of oneself.

VSG on 12/20/07 with
surface vs. substance.  i don't think they're related.

when my baby favah, barack  was in college he described himself as a not particularly good student at first, a skinny aliented kid who didn't fit entirely into one world or the other.   he also says that at some point he stopped letting his outside dictate his inside.

he might still think of himself as the skinny big eared outcast  (that's image)

but he's the POTUS (that's esteem)

Hey Now:
Ain't that right...and when he wanted Michelle, he kept going back even when he described himself as a "skinny, big eared outcast". The Bruah knew he had it going on inside and won her over with who he IS...Tha's a BADDDD MANNNN, and that's HIGH self esteem. Easy Like Sunday Morning!
