For me WLS was a lost resort after 11 years of thinking about it and doing the YO-YO dieting , aching back & aching knees I knew I had to do something, and at 41 I understood that this was a life changing event and also that I stood a chance of dying on that table.  I made up my mind the end of Oct and had it done the middle of Jan and told no one what I was doing because I didn't feel like hearing you can do it on your on or that's the easy way out (because there was nothing easy about it).

I been yo yo dieting since I was 12.  I finally had my bypass at the age of 28.  I know how to diet.  For me, this surgery wasn't about a diet it was about a commitment that I made to myself to get healthy.  Health and wanting your health has no age requirement.  And eating whatever and battling a craving isn't a sign that you aren't dedicated.  Everybody is different and everybody learns differently.  I'm the type of person who has to learn my own lessons my way.  It's just my nature.  That doesn't mean I'm not dedicated because I am.  I didn't get to 270lbs by eating the right food.  I got there by doing the same things I was taught to do by my momma, who had this surgery 2 yrs ahead of me.  You have to learn how to eat right, you have to learn how to exercise, learn to take your vitamins and protein.  It's not natural or second nature to anyone at the beginning.  If it were, then they wouldn't be here posting on OH.

As far as research goes, I personally feel that the younger you are, the more you are able to access more information.  I grew up on computers and the internet.  Before I had my surgery I spoke to people, joined several groups about the issues with WLS, talked to different drs and met with different surgeons.  So many are willing to talk to you if you stay after their seminars end.  In the end, this isn't about what other's think a person should or should not be doing.  It's about having to live with a life long decision you made or are about to make. Honestly, I put more time and effort into having this surgery at 26( it took 2 yrs to get it) than getting pregnant and having a child at 22.  Both were life altering decisions.  But no one goes around as tells people they aren't deserving of their children because they didn't do enough research or they don't seem dedicated enough.  JMHO
