My daughter wants to start babysitting at 11...they offer a babysitting certification class at our community rec center.  I am giving it some serious thought because I think it will be a good thing for various reasons....just need to work out the details and consider the complications (ie. dont really want her babysitting at anyone else's home...since not necessarily sure who would be coming in and out of them.

At any rate, it just made me think about when I first started working.  I tell you... I had some doosies for my early jobs.  I can mention two off the bat that stick with me.

I used to sell this magazine called GRIT door to door when we lived in Topeka.  This was the okiest, countryest magazine that you would ever run across...but people bought this up like gold...loved it!!!!!!!!!!!

Then I used to pick strawberries, blackberries and tomatoes.  When I lived in Arkansas...the farmers  would come by and pick all the kids up in a truck like we were a bunch of field hands (LOL! I guess we were) and we would go to these huge farms. To pick the strawberries, we had to sit on the ground and scoot down the rows with a crates.  We would then get paid by the crate...this was some very hard work....would leave the field drenched with sweat and then spend all the money on soda, twinkies and honey buns on the way home!!!

I am sure others out there have had some interesting jobs either as a child or at other times in your life...Please share...this might be fun!!!!

LOL - my lil azz was a HUSTLER!!!!!

Being the resident smart AZZ in school, I did study sheets for the honors students and wrote English papers for the football players in the regular program.  My school was in a 'urban' hood - so most of the football team slung dope in the hood = mad $$.  I had single and per semester pricing and even did beginning of the year 'bonus pack' specials....... LOL!!!

I also did hair and nails at the house - but folk in my space got on my nerves so I stopped that, I also did breakfast tacos for a while - but the margin of return wasn't high enough - so I started writing papers - which later grew to resumes and college essays...... I paid for prom, gas for my car and my OWN insurance..... my mama ain't have to worry bout NONE of that!!!!  LMAO

Hell - when i was in middle school I had a hustle.... remember the Garbage Pail Kid cards?  I would buy them off the rich kids for cheap and 'flip' them to the lower grade fools AND I had the 'job' in the library for our ancillary period as the attendant - gave me access to the box where the fines were kept AND the records.... let's just say there weren't a lot of LATE books that year and I STAYED with a soda and bag of chips on the bus EVERY afternoon!!!!!!

ok - nuff of that - no more telling my secrets - that's just the shiot i pulled in SCHOOL - I'm grown now!!!!  LMAOOOOO

naw, naw cuz...... never copped the books - just the money for the late fees..... see, I was in charge of tracking those that were returned late and collecting the late fees..... I just didn't document - but SHO collected!!!!!

As a devout nerd - it would be blasphemy to discard or destroy books - is you crazy!!!!!!

I am an embezzler - not a destroyer!!!!

Nothing exciting....I worked at the grocery store as a bagger for three months. Would you like paper or plastic???

I was promoted to cashier, customer service desk then frozen foods. The store was good to me. When I went away to school, I always had a job waiting for me when I came home on the weekends or during break.

Yes.. I think these are the better part-time jobs for kids or even retirees...everyone that I have known...including my retired cousin loved working in the grocery store for various reasons.

Let's see....

in 7th grade, moms would get me those Hawaiian Punch drink packs... I in turn auctioned them off to the highest bidder.

in 8th-high school, we had some teachers on my street - I graded their papers.

I did babysitting, but it usually wound up that my mom did all the work cuz I was NOT changing shytty diapers.  Mom and dad banned that job.

in high school I was in band.  I'd buy those Rainbow Punches for 10 for a $1, freeze them the night before and sell them for a quarter each after band practice.

When I was old enough, worked @ Wendy's then a grocery store.

In college, a hungry sista got creative.  All these lil white girls in the dorm would see me cooking and said it smelled like home and home was far away.  They said if they could just taste mom's cooking... REALLY?  How bout this then, chica.... you buy the food, I cook it - I get 1/2 if it's something I eat.  If not, you buy and pay.

The other college hustle was I'd set up dorm rooms & apartments for romantically challenged guys, go to Victoria Secrets to get gifts (that was interesting... there wasn't a damn thing in that store I could fit!), get the flowers, either cook or get to go, etc.  And got paid!
I have an @$$h*le, therefore I have an opinion. or two... or forty.

see - we are SO on the same wavelength!!!!

In college I was the 'protection central' room - I used to go to Planned Parenthood for my Depo shots and would cop like two bags of condoms - turn around and sell them hoes for TOP $$ - ain't nothing pay better than a nicca WITH wood outside yo door with a hot, ready to go chick in THEY room. Wasn't no way they would risk her cooling down to go up the street for the shield - so I could get up to $20 a piece!!!!
