Vitamin D Question

I had my six month post -op appt yesterday and my labs are still showing as in my 3 month appt that my vitamin d levels are still low. I have been taking a sublingual vitamin d  1000iu for the past three months. Surgeon does not want to prescribe a vitamin d because he thinks I can try another OTC brand with at least 5000iu to see if my levels increase and he wants me to have labs drawn in three months. He basically said I am not absorbing the vitamin d I am currently using which is twinlabs brand vitamin d dots.

My question is  did anyone else have this problem? And if so, what type of vitamin D are you using now and did it correct the deficiency?

Thanks
Danielle

Hey Danielle

I never had any problem until my 3 year mark this past November. My WLS doc put me on prescription Vitamin D for 8 weeks (I think it was like 50,000 iu's) to give me a bolster. Then I had my labs re-drawn and they were GREAT so he switched me to OTC Vitamin D 1000 iu's taken twice a day at the same time I take my Calcium + Vitamin D...and it's working! My Vitamin D is in pill form and I swallow it...so it's not sub-lingual. I hope this helps...and try to get some sunlight everyday because that helps too naturally!

Thanks.

I did the prescription vitamin d,  pre-op 1 tablet once a week for 8 weeks. The NUT gave me samples from barriatric advantage yesterday and she also said nutrametrix makes an liquid vitamin d. I was just wondering  if  anyone else has experienced this and if they may have found an vit d in gnc, vitamin shoppe or walmart that may have increased their vitamin d levels.

Hi Lashay. Try upping the dosage to 5,000 IU and make sure it's dry. Dry is better absorbed. After surgery, my level was 7 and in 6 weeks it jumped to 63.

Thanks.

What brand did you use, if you don't mind me asking?

I used Bio-Tech Dry D-3 50,000 IU. It's $23.99 and has 100 capsules.

I had a different surgery than you so I have to take some different vitamins. Because of a DSer's malasorption we don't absorb fat soluble vits, that includes ADE&K. Most people get away without supplementing K but most of us all take the AD&E. I get all of these from vitalady.com. Her prices are reasonable and she carries the dry 50K of D that I take everyday. I've never seen this high an IU at GNC or Vitaminshop. I think she also carries the 25K D. Whatever you get make sure its in the dry form.
