I'm not going to debate the shake/no shake debate with lapband patients. Each doctor is different on what they recommend/don't recommend etc. It is liquid calories, that is obvious. At some point though, if you are not using the shake to keep a too tight fill there are some definate real benefits of a good protien shake with a carb/protien combination. At 2-3 years out a bypass patient is absorbing more nutrition from food with the re-growth of villi in the intestine so at some point they may not necessarily need additional supplementation.
That being said, protien shakes were originally intended for athletes. They provide a real source of protien combined with a good carb factor. They help with the fatigue, muscle loss and the recovery post-workout. I drank shakes in highschool when I ran. Bodybuilders drink shakes before and after working out. It's not intended to substitute for real food but as a supplement to help with the building and repair of muscle pre & post workout.
If you are working out and trying to build muscle you are going to need more protien than recommended for day to day living. You will recover from exercise faster, won't be burning muscle while exercising, etc. It's very hard to get that required amount of protien for a "normal" person let alone someone with a band or bypass. Additionally, often with the introduction of protien rich foods you are also adding cholesterol, fat, etc. A shake limits all of those.
Just my .02 cents...
You can easily mix different protiens with water or even cold coffee/creamer combo.
