New Post-op Tip of The Day
Protein shakes vs. Protein bars which one is better for you? I've heard and read lots of statements where people go and buy protein bars because they don't like protein shakes. Well the first thing you should do is read the labels of those bars. Look at the carbs, sugar, sugar alcohol, protein, fiber and most important the calories. The first several months of my wls journey I was only allowed 600 calories a day and a protein bar with 150-200 calories takes a huge chunk out of that and doesn't allow much of anything else.
A protein shake is going to offer at least 25-35 grams of protein without all of the extras and I can add flax seeds or benefiber to it or other things to it to make it taste better without adding a lot of calories. We only absorb about 36 grams of protein at a time so anything over that will just be a waste. When you're early out, there is no way you can eat enough food to get 60-70 grams of proteins so protein shakes are necessary at this point. When you don't get enough protein, you may lose hair, get malnourished and have other health issues.
I'm not saying that you can never have a protein bar, I will have one every once in a while but I only do a half of one as a snack and I will only do one with low carbs, high fiber, low sugar and high protein. They can become addictive and put some weight on you because you treat them like candy bars.
Get your protein in everyday in a good responsible way for maximum weight loss and for your optimum health.
