New Post-op Tip of The Day
Let's talk about coping skills. The other day, #1 Mack Mama started a thread about in real life support people and there was a post yesterday about weight gain after 4 1/2 years and this got me to thinking about coping skills.
In the past, we turned to food to cope with everything, whether we were happy, sad, happy or bored. When we are new post-ops we really can't tolerate food and the least little bit of food is filling and we have just a small range of food in our menus. However, when we get farther out we can eat more and we add different foods to our menus and before we know it we are mindlessly snacking on crackers, chips, m&m's and cookies,
It's important to find ways to cope with things in our lives that doesn't involve being on automatic pilot where we grab a snack. Lately I've been coping with some serious health issues and before I knew it I was snacking on pretzels, crackers, vanilla wafers and hershey kisses. I now know that it was mindless snacking and a way to cope through a difficult time.
Find a friend to talk to, a support group, a message board, a hobby and exercise. A lot of the time when we think that we're hungry we are really thirsty so drink some water and take a walk before reaching for a snack. This surgery is not an easy fix and once the honeymoon period ends and the weight doesn't just fall off then the good habits that you start with will be what saves you and allows you to cope with those cravings.
