New Post-op Tip of The Day
Be careful where your calories are coming from. My surgeon and nutritionist have constantly told us not to drink our calories. Now that is not possible for a new post-op because you're not on solid food yet and protein drinks are essential to your success. Even when you start your mushie stages and solid food stages you won't be able to eat a lot so you must supplement with a protein drink.
However, think about what you're drinking. If you're drinking fruit juice those are really empty calories because it is full of calories even if you water it down. You should be getting your vitamins from your vitamin supplements and fruit juice is basically sugar. Coffee is full of caffeine and that dehydrates you, alcohol is empty calories and doesn't add anything nutritionally to you but can cause weight gain, milk is tricky because many people become lactose intolerant and can add weight., carbonated beverages are not good for us because it gives us gas and adds no nutritional value to us. Water is best but of course it's good to add some sf crystal lite or other brands to your water. Green tea, ginger tea are really good.
If you can get all of your protein through food, that is great, but if not then add a protein shake to your diet or add protein powder to some of your food. Think about what you put in your mouth, that's why it's good to have a plan.
