From the moment I had a child, I took out a $300k policy and added another $300K when I had my second son.  I will keep these amounts until they are through college then drop to enough to cover my funeral arrangements and outstanding bills.

This issue affected me as a child when I was thirteen my father passed and did not have insurance.  His sister foot the bill of the funeral and never let his children who were children at the time live that down. A friend from high school oldest brother killed the youngest brother and he did not have insurance.  The family was devastated in more than one way because of this.  So I keep insurance on my whole family.  I purchased enough insurance so my husband can provide for my children and pay off our home.  This is something you must have because death is mandotory for all. Great post I will always keep insurance on all my immediate family because of this very issues.

We had to borrow to bury both of My-I-L"S of course no one had the money.
There was 7 brother's and sister's only 3 paid for father-in-law.  And when mother-in-law passed it was only 6 left 2 paid guess who.  My parents made a will and have plots pay for when my baby brother got killed.  It just hit home for them the planning of his funeral.  They didn't want us to have to go thru all of that. I have not planned any of the details but there is policies for both of us. We always think our children will bury us but it not the way it always goes.  Thanks to the people at the HB job and also my S-I-L that help make arrangement  we had the policy but the planning.
THANKS FOR REMINDING EVERYONE OF THE IMPORTANT OF HAVING INSURANCE.

It took me a minute to get back to this post but Candace I agree this is an important topic that need to be discussed I work with death claims and I see how folks leave their insurance money to minor children and have to wait until they are 18 or family members needing to incur court cost to become guardians of estate because they leave it to an estate that is not created.

I remember telling my cousin that she needed to get insurance on her children and she said she didn't want to think about that WTF!!!

My mother has a will and I am the executor and we've discussed what she wanted to hapen to her as well as to her possessions as outlined in her will. My stepdad went so far as to write his own program out and decide on his final outfit. I've told my husband that if something is to haen to me before we have kids to have a memorial service for me here and then send my body to my mom because I don't want to be left in GA alone and he either a)forgets about me or b) feels guilty and can't move on. I also have a living will in  place. So we're not the atypical black family.

But my dad??? We going to have to have fish frys and car washes to bury him because he will not be resonsible and I've told him I refuse to send MY money to bury him while he spent all of his killing himself (with cigarettes, alcohol)

Candance, your observation is right on target!  I can relate to all the personal experiences shared.  Are we not our brothers keeper?  I cannot stress the importance of communication within the immediate family unit.  Make sure that you that you take care of those around you AND communicate your personal plans in the event of death.  Families must openly discuss funeral arrangements to determine members without life insurance.  We must then focus on educating those family members, of the importance of securing afforable life insurance!  You are absolutely right, often people fail to think beyond their death and the financial burden upon their immediate familes they leave behind.
