Leave of Absence Question
I'm sorry...but you are on LEAVE from your job! That means, they are not paying you to be off work (unless you have those benefits). But for your boss to call you, etc., there may be some labor laws that he is breaking.
Unless you have that type of relationship with him that he can call you 24/7 or ask you to "keep your phone on" - that is some foolishness...and it is not conducive to your leave of absence.
Are you being paid your salary during these calls??

I will be getting paid but I have to use my vacation and sick time. If I have to stay out longer than expected, I'll have to go on State disability. I called and left a message for our LOA analyst so she can tell me what the policy states. He's just going to have to manage without me because I don't need any stress form work. I need to focus on my recovery and my new life.
I'm getting mad just thinking about it! He should have enough common courtesy to not expect me to "work" when I'm recovering from surgery anyway.

You are in California which has some, if not the best labor laws in the country. FMLA protects your job for 12 weeks. There are worker's comp issues at play when an employee works while on LOA. Your boss should have only been informed that you were going on leave and not the reason. Even if you work at the hospital where your surgery is taking place. Your boss will be in violation of HIPAA if he tells anyone about your surgery.

He's 71
That explains a lot.

Old dude is not going to change. You're going to have to work around him. You do not have to be at his beck and call 24-7. He is out of his mind. You need peace and quiet to rest and recover from your surgery.
I like the idea of enlisting your husband's assistance in intercepting the phone calls. I would allow the answering machine to pick up the phone when he wasn't home. If old dude is presumptuous enough to come knocking at your front door, just don't answer it.
If all else fails, you just might have to go off on him one good time. You can pretend it was the meds that made you do it.

I can relate. But showing up at your home?? And you work in the same hospital where you will have the surgery?? Your nurse might be dropping off your tasks, compliments of the boss.
I received a Blackberry about a year ago. During this time my immediate boss was out sick so I took on some additional responsibilities while he was out. Initially I thought it was COOL…having a work Blackberry. But that thing is a leash. They can call ANYTIME!! March 31 through April 15 they’re gonna hear “I’m sorry I missed your call….please leave a message at the tone and I’ll be happy to return the call on…..."
