New Post-op Tip of The Day
Just because we had surgery doesn't take away our desire for food. You will learn real fast that the wls is 90% mental and 10% physical. When I was on my 2 week liquid diet before surgery, until my first healing stages of surgery I was dreaming about food. Oh yes, I had pizza, burgers, fries, shakes (I hated milkshakes), fried chicken, cheesecake, pie, cookies, steak etc dancing in my head and it didn't help that every other commercial was something food related. ![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/angry.gif)
We have to learn how to eat healthy even though we are losing weight. Because there will come a time once the "honeymoon phase" is over and the weight doesn't just melt off and if we haven't been eating right then what will we fall back on.
I've read on many boards on OH from posters stating that they can eat anything and even some posters nickname their pouch the "cast iron pouch" because it can hold anything. That can be a blessing and a curse. I say a curse because some people think because they can eat pasta without any side effects they will eat it, or sugary foods or carbs. Well think back to the reason you had surgery. I had surgery because I was eating way too many calories of sugar, fat, carbs and fried, fatty, fast, foods. I had other issues too because of steroids due to illness but the majority was wrong food choices. If I start back eating those things then when my window of losing weight is over, I will gain weight all over again.
Just because I can doesn't mean I should. This doesn't mean not to treat yourself. I treat myself and I make sure that I don't go over 6 grams of sugar which is strict but I'm scared of dumping. We need to eat real food but we have new rules. Make sure you always put protein in first and then a veggie if you have room for it. Also never forge****er and vitamins.
The mental part of wls is extremely hard and no this surgery is not the easy way out. Some people may need counseling, some need support groups and some do fine with on line support just make sure you have a plan. If you don't have a plan, then you will turn back to food and we all know where that can lead. Let's support each other.
