About the VSG which is fairly new , would you have gotten that instead of the RNY and why? Even if your insurance did not cover it , would it have been one of your choices if they did?

To answer you no. I think it is a good restrictive procedure, but I wanted both restriction AND malabsorption. If I knew then what I know now, I likely would have gotten the DS. Sometimes they do it in 2 parts, the VSG first, then the 'switching' on your intestines.

Nope; however that DS would have been my choice...wasn't available to me almost 6 years ago.

Actually, the VSG isn't new.  It's just been called many things over the years (I believe, but don't quote me).

I concur with Valena, I would have gotten the DS but the RNY and LapBand were the only options made available to me.

Knowing what I know now, I want to have the DS and I've asked for the DS but because my insurance doesn't cover it, I'll have to choose between the RNY and VSG...I don't plan on regaining the weight back once I lose it but if I do, and that's a might big if, the VSG has more options for revisions if needed.

VSG has been done for many years for stomach issues (cancer, ulcers, etc).  The "just recent" part is for the case of it being a "stand-alone" procedure for WLS.  It has been highly effective in treating those other things with weight loss being listed as a side-effect or benefit.  It is quite unfortunate that all WLS are not given the same consideration when it comes to individual choice.  If the NIH gives the requirements then I just don't understand how it's so easy for the insurance companies and others to change the determination.....urghhhhhhhh.....bugs the heck out of me.
The question that I am asked most often:

1.  peachy is that your real hair?   :rofl2:(kidn)

2. insurance companies are getting away with refusing b/c sleeve results are accidental, like post its.  it was a procedure for other stomach issues, the discovered side effect was weight loss, so as a stand alone, insurers get to call it *experimental* with studies to follow.  who knows how long it'll take to get approved, if at all.

3. i think surgery's so personal that everybody's reason for their choice is different.  i was a self pay so the type was up to me and i chose it because from what i'd read and heard it was the least "restrictive".  i knew i'd be pissed if i ran across a food that was supposed to make me sick.  i just wanted to be able to push back from the table, end of story.  ds is something i didn't know enough about to have considered but overall, i've had no regrets and would comfortably recommend vsg to anyone who was willing to look it over.

Lap Band on 09/30/05 with
Hello...I have the band and I have NO REGRETS..but I think I probably may have chose the VSG if I had that choice now..but the verdict is not out in terms of KEEPING the weight off meaning the stomach CAN stretch years out....so maybe the band IS the best choice for ME since I can always get fills and easily lose weight years out if my band loosens up...and I am living that right now after a recent weight gain and I got another adjustment and lost the weight easily at almost 4 years out......I have nothing against RNY....but it is not for me, I fear dumping and pouch stretching....
