OT: Wednesday Morning Bird Quiz II
CONGRATULATIONS TO FAITH...
...This is indeed the "Ring-necked Duck".
You'd think this bird would have been named the "Ring-billed Duck". But this points to something that happened with naming birds a few centuries ago. Folks used to "birdwatch" with shot-guns. They didn't have binoculars like we have today. So they would actually shoot the bird to get a good look at it. With this quiz bird in hand...a person could easily see the "ringed-neck"...and that's how it got its name. On the below photo...you can actually make out the ring on the neck. (But I've actually rarely seen this duck well enough to actually "see" the "ringed" neck.)
