Other Weight Loss Attempts

Good morning BAF...After reading through SO many profiles I learned that many people had failed weight loss attempts prior to having surgery...I for instance I did LA Weight Loss in Sept 2005 and went from 278 to 208...That lasted for about a year...I gained back up to the 290's and tried Weigh****chers (which is a good program) in Jan 2008...but I could never lose the weight...I tried again Sept 2008 (A month before my consult)...I weighed in at 294 on the day of my consult (Oct 14) and had surgery 2 months later (Dec 15)...How has WLS been different from dieting for you? For those who never made other attempts do you regret not trying prior to surgery...

FYI: I love what GNY has done for my life and I would do it all over again?

Good Afternoon,

The RNY has been different in that I had no choice.  i did not have to rely on will power and once the weight came down and I was able to move around again I was able to keep active.  With other attempts no sooner had I lost any weight and tried to stick to healthy eating the weight was right back.  I even gave myself a year to lose with diet and exercise.  i stuck with it and I lost a whole 3 lbs.

As a child my parents took me to my first dietician at the age of 6.  I've done National Weight Loss Centers, Weigh****chers, Jenny Craig, Phentermine, and trainers.  all of these worked for about my first 50 lbs, but with my surgery its the 1st time I'm not hungry all the time and that I am easily satisfied with small servings.

Yes so many that were mentioned along with vinegar cider.  I also lost 40 pounds on LA however gained it back cause I got cute with my wl.  So I agree with my RNY I will have discipline and modification with my eating.  As I said, If I truly thought another way was out there I would be trying it im done.

Hi Isa,

I tried all types of diets and even created a few of my own in the process.  Having WLS still requires me to work at it.  I am struggling with losing and regaining the same pounds.  I so wished that I had taken full advantage of the "honeymoon" phase.  I did have a goal in mind of 180.  I would be so happy to be under 200 again right now.   I have decided that if I can ever get back to my lowest weight of 192, this would make me so happy.  I am going to take it a day at a time.  I was supposed to be on board with the protein train today...well, I let it pull right on out without me.  I have to do better and will hop aboard tomorrow.  WLS is not the easy way out...please don't ever forget that.

Hey Faith...I hope that you make it back to your lowest...It is a daily struggle but it will work its way out...I tell people all of the time that this is the hardest thing I have ever done.

Hi Faith,

What "Honeymoon" phase are you talking about?

Hi Sam,

IMO, the honeymoon phase is when you are have the best chance of maximizing your weight loss which can be anywhere from the first 12-18 months.  In some cases the honeymoon maybe two years.  For me, it was the first year.  I advise anyone to take advantage of this period which means  don't try any foods other than what your doctor/nut suggests and exercise.  I thought it was cute to lose weight and not exercise.  I lost 62 pounds in the first 7 months.  If I had been exercising as well, who knows what I could have lost.  It's a new day and I will get to my goal even if it takes me another year.
