POST OP PREGNANCY AND PLASTICS QUESTIONS

I decided to have WLS 6 months ago, and am currently 14 weeks post op and have lost 76lbs, think im doing ok, I always feel i could be doing more and better. Part of the reason is my biological clock is ticking fast. Im 27.8, no kids. And we want at least 3. However, I think I may be being selfish b/c im afraid to lose all ive worked so hard for and fear that one day after I give birth, ill wake up fat again.

I hear how everyone is doing well, loving their families, enjoying their kids and getting ready for plastics. So i have had a few questions on my mind lately and figured now is a good time to pose them:

1. How soon after wls did you decide to get pregnant/when did you get pregnant post op.
2. Any complications to your pregnancy?
3. How quickly did you bounce back? did you get back to your goal/working weight?
4. did anyone actually have plastics and then get pregnant? How did that work out?
5. As a culture, would you say African American's are less likely to get plastics post op?
---do we have less of a body image complex post op/goal weight?
6. Any advice to a post op, childless sistah?

It is advised that you wait until after pregnancies to have plastics otherwise you're just restretching the skin.  I found myself pregnant at 12mos PostOp.  I gained 50lbs during that pregnancy and lost all of it and more.  My Surgeon told me from the beginning that pregnancy did not mean eating badly or failing to exercise.  I did suffer low blood sugar during my pregnancy and had to take extra supplements due to the baby requiring far more nutrients than I was able to take in.  I had a healthy baby boy although they took him 4wks early due to his position.  I was lucky to give birth  at the beginning of Spring's good weather. Walking the baby 3xs a day allowed me to lose my baby weight before returning to work after maternity leave.  Although while pregnant I felt that I could eat a little more...I found that after giving birth my tool was not broken.  I will tell you that I have met some who went the lazy route and never took off the weight gained while pregnant and continued to add to it.

Awesome. Thanks for your response. So i have to remember to take my "wake the **** up" pill after the pregnancy. I know its all in the mind, but i tell you, the thought of pregnancy freaks me out beyond belief for fear of gaining it back.. But I know I have to have kids. At least 2.

I was pregnant at the same time as my Surgeon's wife we gave birth during the same week.  By the time I had an appointment at 6wks after my delivery, I'd lost my weight but his wife hadn't.  I already had one child so I didn't want a third. Had I wanted another I wouldn't have feared doing so.

I know a close family member who had lost 125 lbs in 6 months and then got pregnant unexpectedly after WLS.  The child is now two and she stalled for about 3 months but then started losing again.  My surgeon said if I wanted any more children I  should wait until I was about 18 months out to begin trying to get pregnant.  I have 4 and will never have another, my hubby wants one more but as soon as he carries it we will have it.

The answers below are based entirely on my family member with whom I am very close and know the intimate details of her pregnancy so it is not a guess.

1. How soon after wls did you decide to get pregnant/when did you get pregnant post op.

6 months

2. Any complications to your pregnancy?

no complications

3. How quickly did you bounce back? did you get back to your goal/working weight?

about 3 months the weight began coming off again and she is still losing

4. did anyone actually have plastics and then get pregnant? How did that work out?

she is considering plastics now

5. Any advice to a post op, childless sistah?

Be easy is my advice no matter how much you weigh if you are healthy the baby will be too and if you work your butt off your tool will be there for you when the baby is born.  But the blessing of a baby is worth the chance of a stall or a little gain.  Good Luck to you.

Miz D gave great advice so far.  Here are my responses:

1. How soon after wls did you decide to get pregnant/when did you get pregnant post op.
Surgery July 2007, Pregnant March 2008, had lost 142 lbs with about 100 more to go
Much earlier than my surgeon wanted, but my High Risk OB was OK with it

2. Any complications to your pregnancy?
I needed to do bloodwork every 3 weeks and sonograms once a month.
My vitamin levels remained pretty low, even with extra supplements.
Iron became the biggest issue.  Overall though, no actual complications

3. How quickly did you bounce back? did you get back to your goal/working weight?
Gained 24 pounds, baby born at 8lbs 10ozs.  Delivered on 1/13/09, weighed 2/27/09 and was down 22.
Just got the ok from my 6 week checkup to get back to light/moderate workouts and I'm looking forward to it.  I have about another 100 pounds to lose

4. did anyone actually have plastics and then get pregnant? How did that work out?
N/A

I only plan on having one child, so I am very interested in having plastics after I've lost more

5. As a culture, would you say African American's are less likely to get plastics post op?
---do we have less of a body image complex post op/goal weight?

Can't really speak on that, as I have every intention on finding a way to get mine done.

6. Any advice to a post op, childless sistah?
Assemble a good team to help you.  Your surgeon, a regular OB, at least one consult with a high risk OB and get your labs done frequently.  Don't use it as an excuse to eat, eat, eat!   :)  Check out the PostOp Pregnancy board also - lots of helpful info there.
