If there are any women or even men of color reading this who can help me out i'd appreciate it -Not to be rude but I am a racially mixed female and my hair is a mixed texture and fairly long unfortunately it is fine and was getting thick prior to surgery...I know alot of people experience hair loss BUT it is different for women of color... I am experiencing some loss at my temples especially the left one and at the ironically the right nape of the neck I have taken my Biotin 5G and also My protien and my vits what I can get down the funny thing is what is coming out looks like healthy good bulbs at the end... Like they shouldn't be coming loose.. Weird Anyhow I am very very nervous I am getting married this year and I don't wanna be bald I am NOT into getting a weave and wigs so what if anything can I do to curb the situation along and if nothing else how long before it STOPS... And will it get worse before it gets better? If there are any women of color out there reading who've gone through this ,pls let me know-thanks..

Greetings,
I am racial mixed too and my hair thinned out as well.  One thing i can preach is take your vitamens every day be faithful to your vitmans and your protein.  However even if you do that you are highly likely to still have hairloss.  I lost alot of hair especially in the front of my head.  One thing i can also suggest is pon't pull you hair into a poney tail.  I cannot tell you how long it maybe befor it stops maybe 4-6 weeks maybe more.  But know you won't go bald and it will come back.  My head is full of baby hairs.  You may want to ask you doctor abou it is as well.  This is the fall back of WLS but I will gladly take it.

I think I have to have lost 50% of my hair.  I have a lot of bald spots and I am trying to let go of the ponytails to try to get it to grow and fill in the bald areas.  There was nothing that saved my hair I just had to learn to accept that I would lose hair.   But for most it does grow back.

I am learning with you...I have some shedding, but I am trying to watch closely. I noticed that taking an extra multi has helped, but one thing, I believe that liquid is best to take everything. I tried both and I believe that although we are taking pills for some stuff, liquid is best in the beginning. Contact the Surgeon and NUT. It can be a factor of many things.

Hi im not sure if this will work or not because i am only pre-op.  I hope i dont encounter this hair loss issue, but just in case i do.  i plan to use aloe vera gel, blue magic hair grease, parnavu, ultra sheen, sulfer 8 (yellow jar) and/or glovers main.  these are all products that i know help hair growth.  Not using them all together, but each and everyone of these old school products work! try them and see how they work for you, everyones hair is different, we just have to see what works for us on an individual basis.

Hey Layla,

I am almost 5 months post-op and my hair started shedding in Dec.  It stayed in a pony tail because I was always working out.  Overall pony tails aren't good for your hair period, not everyday over a long period of time.  One thing I have noticed is when my hair/scalp is dry, it sheds more.   My hair is also shedding from the root and I can see the white bulbs, honestly speaking it's best to shed at the root then to break midway.  Hair loss is a side effect and something we all have to deal with.  I use Biotin daily, when I wash my hair I use Biotin 3-Step Shampoo/Conditioning Treatment that I purchased from the Vitamin Shoppe ($30).  In a support group meeting I attended earlier this month the question was asked and we were told it takes 2-3 months to see any changes (so if you start taking something now it won't be for a few months before you see results).  I know yours came sooner but you also have to remember you were under a tremendous amount of stress prior to the surgery, which is also a hair loss factor.  Moving forward I would suggest no more pony tails because we put more stress on our hair line, the top of our head and the nape of our neck.  I don't think the length of your hair plays any significance in the loss, I can tell you I have a co-worker who had the surgery over 7 years ago and she advised me she is still losing hair but hair continues to grow also.  My hair is healthy and just past my shoulders I have never worn a weave or wig and I can tell you this, I'd rather be shedding hair in 5 months than to still be carrying the 105 pounds I lost. I am getting a weave within the next week, I don't like them but I want my hair to have as less tension as possible.  We aren't Sampson, we won't loose our strength if we lose our hair, we are some of the worlds Biggest Losers, we will gain strength because we made a choice to do something about our problem.

I know it's long and I hope it helps.  Take care and God Bless
