Is it Black History Month right?
I just realized that not one of these kids brought home anything or any type of Social Studies activity relating to Black History Month. I know we have a Black President and that alone may suffice for some people but still where the hell are all of the commercials, McDonalds 360 Black, etc, etc??? WTF?
Tis better to be dis-liked than to be loved by them cuz your always on their mind.
Girl please. They teach kids today the same stuff they taught us when we were in school and I'm 41. That is that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for civil rights and did the "I Have A Dream Speech" and was assassinated in Memphis, TN. George Washington Carver did a lot of stuff with sweet potatoes and peanuts and Malcolm X was a bad man and called white men the devil. ****Noticed I said that was what we were taught and not what I believed.**** I don't want anyone turning my words around.
I'm sure that they are having to add Pres. Obama now even though they don't want to. In my area they wouldn't even let the students watch the Inauguration if it wasn't related to theclass/ subject because of parents calling in not wanting their kids to watch it.

I have been feeling the same way. I mean, I have seen a few things come home from my son's school but it is always the same handful of people. We contributed much more to history then MLK, and Rosa Parks. I remember last year this time I nearly made a scene in a Barnes and Noble by my job. I was looking for some books for my son to supplement his Black History and I kid you not they only had kids books for MLK, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks, oh yeah, they had books on slavery too. I went off, I am like it is black history month and this is all you have on the subject? This is all you think we contributed? Anyway, I now realize that it is my job to make sure that he learns all he can (the school is not going to teach it). I had to go online to find some books for him.
The tv programming is way off it's usual mark. Last year black history month programming started the 1st of January and didn't end until March. This year there isn't much and it's the same old stuff. I used to love how some networks cracked open the vaults and brought out some old stuff that wasn't blaxploitation films.
The only new thing I saw was on PBS last night. It was a story about slaves who fought for the British in the Revolutionary War and were promised freedom. They were sent to Nova Scotia but the climate was too harsh and then they were sent to Sierra Leone. As usual something bad happened in the end. They were promised land and ended up being forced to work for the British...
I think the networks are slacking off because Obama was elected.
