New Post-op Tip of The Day

Today we're going to talk about vitamin D. We've talked about supplements before but vitamin D needs it's own post. The majority of the population, especially African American are depleted in vitamin D. I know many of you are saying that your multi-vitamin has D in it but that's not enough.

You will probably get you first labs done at your 3 month appt. and they will check your vitamin levels. My vitamin D has always been in the tank. I have to take 5,000 IU vitamin D a day and was at one time having to take 10,000 IU a day. One reason we are often so low in vitamin D even before surgery is because a high percentage of AA's are lactose intolerant so we don't drink milk. Also we have a good dose of melanin in our skin that protects us from the sun.

15 minutes a day in the sun can help increase our vitamin D but also take a separate supplement to help in this area. Always discuss this with your surgeon and nutritionist, and don't take mega doses unless they tell you to but it won't hurt to take some amount.
