Another aspect from your OP (what should prison be like)?  I believe that non violent offenders, drug users, and young adults(non violent) should be in a therapeutic setting like a boot camp.  Also prison should have the same level of information (cable, food inexpensive, etc), just like we do. Im talking on the USP level and down.
I pray to always remember newbies

it depends on what your expectations are for the future of that inmate.

if you expect this person to rejoin society at some point, you may want to treat them in the most humane way possible.  because what if you make prisons as savage and demoralizing as possible and then you unleash that person on the world at some point?

but if you are locking people up forever, it don't really matter how bad you treat them.  eliminate tv, weight rooms, all that.  the goal wouldnt be to rehabilitate it would be to punish.

The problem with the majority of prison populations and prison is it is a temporary fix and not a solution.

I have huge issues with this subject so I'm going to try and tone it down before I get the confused white girl speech again but the bottom line is this...

We need to look at our community in general before we start making prison less cushy.  Let's stop passing kids that can't perform just because, let's pay teachers more, let's provide real resources for single parents and encourage real marriages where the man is actually a man and if not he is still their in his children's life...

Let's stop putting the NFL/NBA dream in our children's lives and start encouraging READING, EDUCATION and a return to real values.  That a hard days work is worth something in the end.

You cannot lock up someone from a bull**** home/society and then let him go with no education, training and a real chance of making it...he's going to be right back in.

I want to see prisons teaching, training, motivating and promoting self-worth.  Then society needs to give them a chance.

We should have the majority of our prisons be a 2nd chance at living instead of a lockup to same ****different day.

I'm not saying that some people shouldn't be locked up but an 18 year old in for a drug charge on a quick hustle because that's all he knows should be taught something else than 4 walls and bars clanging.

small note - there aren't actually bars in most prisons - just steel doors......

my BF pointed this out to me - his observations from his times in county............

Yes I think the prisons here are too cushy.  I feel for the ones that are in there through no fault of their own, i.e. mistaken identity, set up and the such.  However for the others, they should get freebies when I pay 883.10 a month for health care and for my hubby we spend over 2,400 per year for medicines.
Whenever they go from one facility to another they get a free ride.  No cable fees, free maid and cook.  They do the crime and we pay for their time.  Now that's inhumame.

 With  I will succeed.
