Hi -
I had RNY surgery 1 month ago and now I am starting to worry about my hair thinking out or worse falling out.  Can you give me some direction of what some of you have done?  I get a relaxer every 6-8 weeks. I don't do braid because I don't know how to take care of them.  HELP!!! :-)
thx
Iman

My hair began to fall out at about 3-4 months. The amount varies  for each person.

In addition to your multivitamin,  take Biotin, and you should use either Dr. Miracle or Organic Root Simulator hair growth oil (sold in Walgreens, Walmart, and Beauty SUpply Stores).
Tis better to be dis-liked than to be loved by them cuz your always on their mind.

perhaps try taking biotin and selenium supplements a long with using pure jojoba oil(which is the most similar oil to human sebum-----a natural oil that the human body produces to moisturize itself... ) also try getting a couple of essential oils to make a scalp growth oil....

peppermint essential oil,(about 15 drops)
rosemary oil(about 15 drops)
pure vitamin e oil(1 TBS)
carrier oil like jojoba, or sweet almond oil, or even olive oil(2 or More TBS)

and apply locally to trouble spots , or to the entire head and massage through... it'll make your head tingle, it feels awesome
and essential oils are now being sold in major grocery stores now...

Hey there,

I am only 3 weeks out as of tomorrow, but this is the regimen that I was taking before surgery. I am scared I will lose my hair since it is already thin.
I'm not trying to become bald.

Biotin 5000 mcg
Zinc 50mg
Selenium 200mcg
Vitamin E 400 IU
Silica (horsetail) 300mg

My friend, profile name, Ms Shell, started taking these vitamins 1 week before surgery and she has not lost any hair, after a year later.

I will start back taking my vitamins hopefully about 1 or 1 1/2 months out. I'm trying to get my water in. I'll ask my doctor when I go when I can start back taking them.

I hope this helps.

Hi,
I am 4 months out and haven't had any hair loss.  Getting in your protein, taking your vitamins, and keeping your hair conditioned is the key.  I also take Biotin pills.  Additionally, I stopped getting relaxers.  You can't tell though....most Black women don't know that their hair in its natural state can be maintained without a perm; I simply use good straightening serums and get it flat ironed/pressed and it wraps and is actually STRAIGHTER than when I had a perm.  Also, perms have lots of chemicals that make your hair more 'elastic' and thus susceptible to easy breakage.  I would suggest a good protein conditioner also if you are getting a perm.  The vitamins help also.  There is also a Biotin shampoo.

Good luck!

Hi There Mill!

What type of straightening serums do you use? I was also told that I might not want to perm my hair for about 6 months after surgery.

I had the same problem just after surgery.  I lost a lot of hair.  I had hair nearly on my shoulders and no matter what I did it did not seem to stop shedding.  I even with going to the hair salon every week with the conditions.

I thought I was eating enough protein but apparently not.

And take plenty of biotin also if it does start to shed don't worry to much about it.
I was able to get a cute layered bob haircut and all my weight loss it was so cute.

Keep up the good work I lost about 20lbs my first month too.
